| I was just wondering what anyone thought of going to a Jimmy John's and getting one of their lettuce wraps. It is the same as their normal subs but just wrapped in lettuce instead of bread. I just wanted to see what people thought. Thanks! |

Hi Tigger,
I have not heard of these places. I do see they are a chain headquartered out of Chicago.
You'd have to know if the rest of their meat, dressings, etc are GF.
THEN you'd have to deal with the cross contaminiation issues!
I suspect they just reach in to the meat with their gloves. This would allow the chance of bread crumbs to get into the potential GF food - even if they had changed gloves to make your lettuce wrap sub.
Do they slice their own meat? If so, if they slice some NGF meat and then slice GF meat - it contaminates the GF meat.
Some places are a bit more condusive to GF eating...sub shops...might be a little scary for some. _________________ Al

Hi! aklap
I figured that is what someone would say... I was concerned about the cross-contamination as well. Before my diagnosis of Celiac Disease 2 years ago I loved Jimmy John's subs..they were sooo yummy, so I have been craving them! I am in my 5th year of college so I am naturally around people that a lot of time they will order Jimmy John's and it always smells sooo good. I am very strict though with my Gluten Free Diet. No matter how much I am craving something I will not have a non-gluten free food because as all of us know getting sick is not worth it! Would you know of any good Gluten Free sub recipies that could maybe curb my craving!? Thanks for your reply!

I have this belief that whatever it is I crave "out," I can make it at home, so that's what I do when I really crave something beyond the ordinary list of stuff I make.
In this case, think about the specific ingredients, and then get your friends together for a sub/lettuce wrap party! You supply the things that you have to watch the label on (cold cuts, dressing), and have others bring the rest of the stuff!
(You could just make it a lettuce wrap party -- they could do the low-carb thing for the evening, if you keep a GF kitchen.)

| While I don't have CD, I think I can answer this as I eat at the Jimmy John's on campus here fairly often. I don't care for most veggies so I order the plain subs. Most of the time I find lettuce on my sub anyway. They don't change their gloves and use common area to prepare the food. Thus, you'd be almost certain to get glutened as it is a sub shop with bread all over the place. |
