I've read that San-J Wheat Free Tamari sauce is ok but I'm wondering if that's true. The last month we've been eating out a lot, making crock pot meals, etc, as our kitchen has been torn out for a remodel. This of course makes things difficult.
Anyway, we eat out at sushi places a lot as it's about the only thing I can find besides salads. I get raw fish and rice or rolls, no soup, etc. And I bring my own tamari. I have had some stomach discomfort after using San-J Wheat Free Tamari and am wondering if it's just some coincidence. I have been eating GF for 2 months now. My husband has had a somach bug the last week or so - it could be I have a lesser form of that. He made a stew with the tamari sauce and my stomach hurt after. And another time I took some Braggs Liquid Aminos to the sushi restaurant and had no ill effects.
Anyone else have problems with these? Thanks! |

Hi,
From what I've seen they have 2 versions...a wheat version & a wheat free version. That's kinda scary (Midel has 2 Ginger Snaps too. A GF & a NGF version. People have grabbed the wrong bad )
People on the Dephi boards use the San-J and the Braggs Liquid Aminos w/o problems. I use LaChoy Soy Sauce which is GF too.
Hmmm hard to say what it was from. Have you always used San-J?
Do you have an Outback Steakhouse or a PF Changs (Asian food) near you? They have GF menus. I don't know how well I'd do at a sushi house. I prefer my fish cooked just a wee-bit more than that. LOL!!! _________________ Al

No PF Changs (nearest is 90 miles, but I did note the address in case I'm there) but we do have an Outback. BUT, with the nightshade allergy I have, all the pepper seasoning in the foods at both are an issue. I read the PF Changs menu, they use some kind of spicy pepper in their wheat free sauce. Something about having to ask for even more special food prep from the special food prep menu... it's a bit daunting at times.
I did eat at a Logan's Roadhouse recently and found that I could order a baked sweet potato instead of a regular one (allergic to the regular ones) so that was a nice surprise. I'm not usually a chain restaurant diner as we have really good restaurants in my town, but now I rarely eat out anymore anyway. I'm depressed about blue cheese, a favorite of mine. And I mean the really good creamy ones from France that certainly use bread for the mold - I got a reaction two weeks ago...
I have been using the San J wheat free tamari for a couple of years now. But only since going gluten free the past two months has it been something I've wondered about. I have no problems at all with Braggs - I had sushi last night with it. We ate at the sushi bar and the Japanese man working the bar had to pick up the bottle and look it over, ask about it, wonder if I didn't like all the sodium, etc in regular stuff. I told him three times it was the wheat and he looked baffled each time. Could have been a language thing - I could barely understand him either.
I'll give it a couple of weeks and try the San J again - it could be a stomach virus - I think my husband has had one. If anyone has a stomach virus within 10 miles of me, I'm sure to get it. OR maybe it was just gluten-intolerance all this time. Hmmmm...
