Has anyone traveled to Russia? How celiac-friendly are they there? What types of foods do I need to avoid? or watch out for? Any help would be appreciated.

Wow - how interesting. I did a google on celiac + russia...came up with this: http://celiac.spb.ru/eng.htm A St Petersburg Celiac Society - it might be a place to start. Looks like you might need to read Russian for some of it.

Good luck!!

I have been to Russia, but it was before I was diagnosed with CD. The food there is pretty awful no matter what you are eating.

I would recommend getting a dine out card in Russian. If you can't find one, get one in English and have it translated. The Russian Consulate in Milwaukee can get you a list of approved translators, and one of them will translate for you for a fee.

I would also write a letter about your diet and send a copy of it to the tour company, the tour director and any tour guides anead of time. Carry a couple copies of the letter with you, as well as a few copies of the dine out card. Laminate them if yo like, or make zillions of copies and spread themaround at everey restaurant you visit.

I did this in the Czech Rep. and had no trouble at all.

Food in Russia consists of bread, eggs, cheese, milk, some kind of yello drink that I avoided, cucumbers, lots of appetizers which they call zakuski, I think, skinny chicken, tiny pieces of fish in a white sauce. Few veggies or fruit. This was a year before the fall of communism, so hopefully things have got somewhat better.

However, NEVER let CD keep you from travelling!

Have fun!
