It seems all the people I know named Barbara are of my generation. Except one. I was a labor and delivery nurse for many years, and about 10 years ago I took care of a patient who liked me so much that she named her baby daughter after me! Then I retired!
My 4 kids got me this computer for Christmas. I'm having a ball with it! When I have time. I plan to take a class with an instructor who never says "We just went over that, Mom".
Al, you know alot about what works and what doesn't. You've had a lot of experience with this diet and you mus tbe a big help to others on this forum. I'm originally from WI, visit there frequently, but don't envy you the snow. It's over 60 F here in So Cal, and believe it or not, I'm cold!

Hi Barbara,
Glad you're having fun with your new computer! What nice kids
Yeah, I've kind of immersed myself in this. I've been GF for a little over 2.5 years. Before that I was pretty sick for 1.5 years. Before that I just had increasing reflux/gas problems. I started researching about 3.5 to 4 years ago. WOW - time flies. Once I figured out what was going on...I didn't want others to go thru that...so I've been hanging out on boards like this. I'll be darned if I was going to let gluten beat me...or anyone else!!
The snow's not too bad. I wouldn't mind if we had snow for just the month of December and that's it. LOL It's just not Christmas w/o snow . Where in WI were you from? I'm live in a little town in the Oshkosh/Fond du lac area (20 miles from each town). I'm about 80 miles north of Milwaukee.
Glad you're here and learning!! _________________ Al

I am 66 years old and have just been diagnosed with celiac sprue. The doctor's office called and told me to go on a gluten-free diet for six weeks then come back for follow-up. I have an appointment with a dietician next week. In the meantime I am avoiding grain as much as possible and eating lots of fruits and veggies.
Should I get rid of all baking products in my cupboard?
I have read a lot of info online, but it is very confusing. I also live in a rural area and do not have access to Whole Food markets. Can anyone suggest a grocery list for a newbie. I guess I will have to buy products online.
Thanks for your help. _________________ Aileen |

Hi Aileen,
Welcome to the board!!
Sorry to hear that you have CD. The good thing is that you now know and can get on the road to health!!
I am glad that you are seeing a dietician. They can be a huge help. One suggestion...ask many questions and make sure they are familiar with CD and a gluten free diet. Unfortunately many RD's (registered dieticians) DO NOT know about it. I went to a the annual Gluten Intolerance Group meeting held in Chicago last year. One of the speakers was a registered dietician who was feeding her husband gluten and wondered why his health was declining. They found out he had CD and she didn't know a thing about it. She now knows about it and does speaking presentations, and openly suggests that your RD knows about CD and the GF diet.
One of the best things you can do is thoroughly clean your kitchen. Pull everything thing out of the cupboards, drawers, fridge. Throw out the glutened products and clean everything.
If you haven't seen Our Thread on GF Diet Boot Camp, please take some time and read thru it. It covers a good deal of the basics. In there are lists of Mainstream GF food that can be found in most grocery stores.
Good luck in your GF Journey! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!! _________________ Al

Thanks for answering so quickly and for your informative info. I'm sure that I will have lots of questions as I get into this diet.
Happy New Year.
