Hi -

Well...my family cannot stand my GF bread! I am using my bread machine. I have found a few favorites...my hubby has found a few "tolerables". But, occasionally I will pop in a batch of regular bread for my son and husband.

When I alternate making loaves, I scrub the pan, etc. thoroughly in hot soapy water between the different loaves. The pan has it's own sponge, scrubber, etc. I really am trying to be ultra careful to avoid cross-contamination!

But tonight I got to thinking...(and I hope this isn't a dumb question!) As I was standing there, leveling out the flour, I could smell it (didn't taste any that I could detect). I was thinking about how fine wheat flour is...

Just how careful do we have to be when working with this stuff for the rest of the family? I know this may sound crazy, but I wondered if I shouldn't be wearing a surgical mask (now don't you guys laugh at me...I am serious...I really don't know!)

I already know about not using the same toaster, etc. We have that covered.

Anybody know??

Carole

Hey Carole,

That's not a dumb questions by any means!!

Yup - it could be a problem. If the flour is poofing around, you can breath it in. If you can breath it in, it may be possible for you to swallow some of it.

I think the "poofing around" thing was what gave me trouble at Thanksgiving when my sister in law and I were cooking at the same time in our kitchen. She was cooking with gluten products and I, of course, was using gluten free products. I didn't think much about it on Thanksgiving Day but realized a little later that I wasn't feeling too great after that. At Christmas I baked a ham instead (no, I couldn't eat the ham either because of another medical diet, but it wasn't "poofing" flour around) and everyone enjoyed it. Much easier! Praying that we each find a safe way to cook and eat. Blessings to all!

Our nutritionist at Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh told us not to have our son in the kitchen if we where going to cook or bake with wheat flour.

Yes, this can definitely be a problem. Our Dr told the story of a patient who swore he was following the diet although his tests showed differently. They finally figured out it was the 'dust' he was breathing while feeding his livestock!

Al -

You are a TRIP....I loved the "poofing". I'll will use that one! Ha Ha

Today I felt really well...but why chance it????

Someone told me to try Manna from Anna...but if it's the one I have in my cupboard, it says "better made in the oven". I need to find the time to devote the hours needed to do that!!

GUESS WHAT YOU GUYS???? We start a new semester in the High School where I work, next Tuesday. I am a special ed para....moving around helping different students from class to class. I just realized my supervisor was talking about putting me in a WORLD CUISINE class with a couple of kids!!! YIKES....this means we could have Greek "poof"....and Italian "poof".....and....and.....Mexican "poof"!! I am supposed to get my schedule tomorrow after a 1/2 day. This poor gal has to juggle the schedules of 12 paras. She is going to look at me like, "Whaaattttt????"

Now that I go back....I remember when my son had his 20th birthday on Oct. 8th. I had just mailed my samples to Enterolab for testing on Celiac. I made Tim a cherry pie...handling a ton of flour....and I remember I didn't feel well afterward. (I hadn't eliminated dairy yet, either). I am beginning to get the connection here, folks!

All I can say is "POOF"! Be gone with ya, gluten!!

Thanks everybody. Wish me luck with my boss!!!

Hi Carole,
I am also a special ed para!!!! I work mainly with kids in grades 4-6 but sometimes also fill in with our severest kids. My schedule is also pretty crazy. Another cool thing is my mom's name is also Carole (with an e) which I think is fairly unusual!!!

You got me, oh wise and wonderous "Poof Master"! HA HA

Al...all I can say is it's downright scary how our humor is in sync. LOOK OUT CELIAC FORUMS...you have been forewarned Laughing All I can say is, Peg must be a saint! Ha Ha

Okay....I DO have one bit of good news. When I saw my doctor today, she told me she would write a medical release to have me exempt from making all ethnic varieties of Poof Pastry (oops, Al...I mean Foods classes!) But, now it looks like I may have to take on a High School Algebra class for cryin' out loud. What in God's name was I thinking???? I actually think getting GLUTENED is better than suffering through this class Rolling Eyes Like they say...be careful what you pray for...you might just get it!

Hey Robin! How uncanny that you are a s.e. para with a mom named Carol(e). What school district are you in? Oh, boy...the adventures we could share, huh? There is nothing more heart rending, loveable and downright hilarious than special ed. I love these kids with all my heart and soul. They can teach us all, much.

Thanks you guys, for all your help!! My household will be 100% GF from now on.
