Diet Soda and Flavored Coffee

I am at that point of "utter amazement" at the sneaky places in which gluten hides!! What an education.

Question for anybody who can help...

Interested in knowing about flavored coffees and also Diet Soda pop.
Had a reaction after Thursday, and couldn't seem to locate anything suspicious that I ate...then I thought...."wait a minute....I wonder if that pot of Maple Creme Flavored Coffee I made this morning had that damned gluten in it!!!!"

Hi Carole,

Most mainstream diet soda is Gf. All the biggies...Coke, Pepsi, etc.

I venture to guess it's the coffee. Ahhhh yes, gluten is a sneaky little devil. It can be found almost everywhere!!!

Wow. Have you ever been a big help. Thanks again so much. Your comment about maybe "getting a hold of a manager" sounded just like my husband!!

I have one more unrelated question.

I am going to see my Doctor this week to ask her if she will order the lab tests for me that Enterolab is offering. It includes the gene panel and the other is gluten sensitivity, etc. It is a stool analysis. I had read a couple of very favorable responses to having it done. I am really, really reluctant to go back and stuff my belly full of gluten, just to become ultra-miserable and have them snip away at my intestines.

What's your take on this testing? I assume it can't hurt to check it out and with the Doctor ordering it and them providing the code, Blue Cross should cover it.

Carole--I got very sick on Hazelnut coffee from a Hess convience store here on Long Island--that was 4 years ago and I will not touch flavored coffees again Crying or Very sad

. My rule of thumb is: I dont try it unless I can read the ingredients and if the ingredient list is too long, forget it! I stick to regular coffee--my favorite being colombian--I love Dunkin Donuts coffee and 7-11. Deb

Thanks so much for giving me your input. You confirmed where my heart was leading me, so thank you!

I was at a local grocery store this a.m. that sells Eight O'Clock coffee. Talked to the manager. Had never heard of gluten. The cashier kept saying "glucose". I thought....WHOA. Also tried to advocate for myself at Baja Fresh (don't know if you have those near you...good Mexican)...bad language barrier, but at least the poor guy tried. I gave up.

Here is my new mantra...

WHEN IN DOUBT....DON'T!!!!!!

I agree about Dunkin' Donuts. If I were in Long Island, I'd buy ya a cup, Sista! HA HA Keep your chin up.

Hi ya Carole--I cant email you cause you are a guest--so----I do know that 8 O'Clock Coffee is ok--we have Waldbaums, a division of A & P stores here and they sell it----most any coffee, as long as it says--100% coffee is ok.

They say you know you are from Long Island if you can name the location of 70 7-11's Laughing

I dont know if I can name 70, but I bet I know of at least 20 in this general area--I moved here from Michigan and to go to 7-11 I had to travel 24 miles--about 30 for a Dunkin Donuts---here, they are everywhere--Starbucks too. I do love my coffee. Deb

Hi Al & Company -

I am very happy to report that I saw my doctor today and she gave an enthusiastic green light to have the Celiac/Gluten Sensitivity test done. I handed her "reams" of research off the net. We both laughed and she said, "Well, girl, you've given me some new, fun, night time reading!"

As I explained about the HDQ (or whatever it's called) gene and how they can detect this stuff through a stool sample 1-2 years after ingesting gluten, she cut in and exclaimed, "Oh! This is excellent! This means it's a very sensitive test and that's very good news."

So, keep the faith, guys. This gal is a D.O. in the Detroit area, and I am sure there are others like her out there, with an open mind and open heart. I sent for the test today and will let you know how it goes.

ALSO - note to Deb! I was having problems with me "account" on this forum. Got an email that it is now fixed and I am officially "zoomers180", so I guess that means we can talk? (not sure how all this works). But, I wanted to tell you (and others) that I contacted Gevalia this week (twice) and both times was told that ALL of their coffees are gluten-free. I bravely made a pot of their Pumpkin Spice this a.m. and had no reaction today!! Let me tell you...it smelled and tasted GREAT.
