. . . so, HELLO!
I've been reading these boards off and on for a while, and decided to finally just register and introduce myself.
I'm female, 49, a college professor, and was diagnosed with celiac MANY years ago, when there were no good GF products (these newbies to CD have no idea how lucky they are to just buy a loaf of GF bread now, or Pamela's cookies, or Amy's dinners!). Very exciting to be able to eat so many good things, and so easily. We keep a 100% GF house, and I rarely eat out (I'm a pretty good cook, so whatever it is I want, I think I can do it just as well or better, and with none of the worries of cross contamination, etc).
I still can't consume any dairy -- always hoped that when my gut healed enough, I might get that back, but it's not going to happen. So, I live GF and dairy-free -- any little bit of dairy is too much for me.
I'm a walker -- 3 miles most days -- and in pretty good health except for the celiac disease, and rheumatoid arthritis which I can't have treatment for because I have bone marrow failure disease (aplastic anemia). But, I just get up every day with a smile and keep going. I have a wonderful 18-month-old granddaughter now, so she's the light of my life!
Okay, VERY nice to meet all of you, and please say hello when you get a minute?

Hello, Lexi!
We newbies do take a lot for granted! But living GF is still difficult - especially when it means having to TOTALLY change your lifestyle! I'm glad you decided to register and introduce yourself! Hopefully you will receive a lot of support from everyone here! Everyone has been really nice and helpful to me!
What I love about this forum is that when I have a question, people go out of their way to help me find an answer! That's great! Looking forward to some viewpoints and ideas from a seasoned vet of CD!

Hello Professor Lexi,
I am one of those lucky newbies you mentioned. I still have a lot of learning to do and I am happy to have found the celiac message board where I can ask questions and get direction and ideas.
Feel free to post your recipes you have worked out over the years -- I am still in the steal from everyone's ideas mode, LOL. |

Hi, Lexi!
I'm on the other spectrum of college life; I'm a student. I am glad that you finally decided to join the board.
Has your GF diet cured your symptoms? How long did it take for your body to finally heal?
It helps a great deal having someone on the board with whom you may be able to confide in. If I ask you questions on how to approach a professor about my disease -- please do not be offended. I love gaining knowledge; and from who better than someone who has been through it?
Take care!
I hope to chat with you often.

Hey Professor!!
Welcome to the board! Glad you "came out of the woodwork". The more the merrier!
Hmmm, we have a Professor...now we need a MaryAnn, Ginger, Skipper, The Howells...CAN I BE GILLIGAN...PLEASE?? HEHEHEHE
Yes you have seen some interesting times. I know some others that were dx'ed 20-25 years ago. Eeek! Back in the days when an EGD struck fear in the hearts of many.
Hope you continue to hang out with us!!
Take care

Welcome, Lexi. Great to have you aboard. I'm a newbie but I now follow two medical diets, so I'm very grateful to have the easier ways to be gluten free. Still wrestling to find a good, tasty biscuit. Any ideas for me? Praying that you'll visit the message board often. Blessings of grace and hope to you and yours. _________________ Carolyn

Hi,
What's your major? Yes, the diet has cured me, but it took me a couple of years to heal well. But one slip and I'm doomed to pain and bloating (like some caramel coloring in some barbecue sauce a year or two ago -- wasn't being too vigilant. I'm SOOOO cautious, but once in a while it happens).
Feel free to ask whatever you like -- I don't take offense to anything.

Sorry, but no good recipes for biscuits in my house . . . no help, am I?
But I'll share what I do know as it comes up here, and hope others will do the same if I have questions. |

Hi Lexi,
I'm going into Criminal Justice. I would love to have a career in the law field. Of course, I am also beginning to become more and more interested in the medical field. Ahhh .. the possiblities are endless.
Some of my professors have been generous, others have not. It's hard trying to explain my condition with them when they have 200 other kids to worry about.
Any words of wisdom?
Thanks for your help, I really truly appreciate it!
Take care!
-Patrick
PS .. sorry for any spelling errors .. I just got off of an 8 hour shift at work _________________ Patrick

Sure, you can be Gilligan . . . keep looking for the rest of the castaways. Tell them the island is GF, too -- no exceptions. |

Thanks for the warm welcome -- not sure how much I have to offer, but I'll put in my two cents worth as needed. |

I like the field of medicine, personally -- not out to influence you or anything!
OK, I hope I'm not being nosy -- how does your CD affect your studies? Are you newly diagnosed or not following the diet, and thereore not controlled yet? Not knowing that, my best advice would be to go to your "Office for Students with Disabilities" with a doctors note -- they'll help you get whatever accommodations you need.
Never apologize to me for typos -- I'm sure I'll have plenty! I type fast, don't proof . . . Typing is not my area of expertise!

Recipes? Me? I just start cooking . . . Never measure or anything. Right now I have baby-back ribs marinating for Saturday night's supper -- a dry rub of cloves, garlic, salt, pepper, allspice, and chili powder. Making potato salad to go with it.
Dinner's at 8 -- join me if you like! |

Hi and welcome Professor Lexi. Its very nice to meet you. My husband is one of those celiacs that was diagnosed nearly 25 years ago. It isn't easy now, but compared to then - its a piece of gluten free cake! There were no GF foods, labeling on packaging wasn't any help and neither were the doctors. My husband was finally diagnosed by a dermatologist, (he has dermatitis herpetaformis) handed an information sheet that basically said "avoid wheat". So while things aren't even close to being perfect now, its WAY easier to find decent packaged foods.
Hope to see your posts often! _________________ Judy

Hi Lexi,
I was diagnosed this summer, June 14. I had been suffering for 5+ years. I am on disability with school. I have the following accomodations: I may have a seat near an exit, as I leave often to go to the bathroom and I may have extra time on exams, due to my absence. The reason that I need these accomodations is my body is not responding to the diet. My GI feels that I have refractory sprue or some other rare type of CD. I try to tell my professors about what is happening, stopping in their office at their specific times. Some understand, others don't. Some are helpful, others are not.
That's why I am so tired of school. I love school, but going to the bathroom every 20 minutes does not help. My GI ran a cat-scan to check my bowels; after a colonosocpy and endoscopy showed everything was normal. He was supposed to call Friday -- but did not. I am hopeful that he found something.
Take care!
