I'm new here & have recently been dx'd w/ CD. The GOOD news is that I already know how to do the gluten free diet, for the most part. My older daughter has Asperger Syndrome (autism) & we did do a GF diet w/ her for about 2 years. We have her off of it now, but I want to have her tested for CD now. We know she had some reactions to gluten containing grains based on life experience & a Mediator release test for food sensitivities.

I know w/ her, when we withdrew food, her behavior whacked out before we saw improvement. I am wondering if adults have a similar type reaction. When the body is getting rid of the gluten, or is deprived of it, does it affect the neurological system & emotions?

I'm asking b/c I've been unusually "dumpy" lately. I know just learning of CD, plus homeschooling special needs kids, running my own business, etc. is stressful, but this is different than that. It made me wonder if I might be having a withdrawal type reaction like my dd had.

THanks for any clues!

Lori

Hi Lori---We gluten intolerant are addicted to gluten and we do go through a withdrawal period, so yes, that can be what you are feeling. Most celiacs or gluten sensitive mourn the loss of gluten, so to speak. I know it sounds funny, but is true. And--for a long time after we are gf we still will crave somethings--with me--its hot ham and cheese on Aunt Millie's Buttermilk bread and egg noodles and Campbells Cream of Chicken soup. Stick with it and keep your chin up. Deb Smile Smile

Hi Lori,

Welcome to the board!

Deb covered the addiction/withdrawal part.

I want to address testing your daughter. In order to test her for CD she will have to go back on gluten in order to do that - which sounds like she already is. Many feel (including some Doctors) feel that doing so is not worth the risk. By re-introducing gluten back into the diet, you risk further damage and the chance of triggering other auto-immune diseases.

Have you seen improvement in her symptoms while off gluten? For many that is reason enough to stay gluten free. With your recent dx of CD and your daughters situation...staying GF maybe the safest way to go.

I would research this quite thoroughly before you make your decision. I KNOW there will be others chimming in on this Wink Is your daughter's daughters health worth risking for that piece of paper that tell's you something you already know? Only you can make the final call.

I wish you well in your knowledge quest!!

Hi, Lori! You will definitely have withdrawal. I certainly did. From what I have read, gluten is a protein that affects your brain and when it is removed, it can cause withdrwal that can get as serious as drug withdrawal - it causes the same chemical reactions. But after you are through it - and give yourself AT LEAST a few weeks - you will begin to feel GREAT!!! Wishing you the best!

Hello, Lori!

I know I am just repeating the same old information .. but here is how I rate the Ups and Downs of the GF diet.

Starting with Downs ..

Sheer Shock
then
Pure Panic
then
Dignified Denial
then
Abject Anger
then
Grim Grief
then
Mourning Your Loss of Convenience
then
Dabbling in Depression
then
UPs .. Acceptance and Adjustment

That was my and still is my road to recovery. If that journey confused you .. sorry. I tend to ramble at random times .. but, hey, I'm 20 .. I've an excuse Very Happy

Take care!
