Posted: Tue Nov 30, 2004 2:20 pm Post subject: Is Thyroid and Celiac connected? |
|
|
I have been diagnosed with thyroid (hypo) for 5 years now and I was wondering if celiac and it could be connected in some way? I have always since childhood had a sensitive stomache but always chalked it up to IBS. I have never been tested so do not know for sure just blamed it on that.
But 4-5 weeks ago after a stressful time of my thyroid acting up (was in the phsyco ward and depressed and out of it foggy mind) and my TSH numbers being really high I came down with diarrhea and it has not gone away. I went to the doctors he took stool samples and we are waiting for the results. In the mean time I am loosing weight, NO appetite and diarrhea and it smells bad and really pale in color. My stomache feels gassy and full so that is why I do not eat plus if I do I have to be close to a bathroom. Like yesterday I ate only a cookie (big one) around 4ish nothing earlier and then ate a burger on a bun at wendys and my stomache felt so full and this morning I had the diarrhea. Just surfing the net trying to figure out what my problem might be. Some on the thyroid boards said I could have celiac and to try not eating wheat. But that is another thing, my husband about 5 weeks ago was told his sugar was high and to switch to wheat bread so I switch with him and this is when other things started with me too. so is it worth a blood test to be sure? How long does it take to get results back? How long after you start celiac diet does the diarrhea stop? I want to feel better so bad, I drink alot of gatorade is that good or bad? |

| I believe that it is always worth the blood test. Thyroid disease is related to celiac disease, and my dad and my aunt both suffer from both celiac and thyroid conditions. I know that since adopting the gluten-free diet following positive test results my dad's thyroid levels are more normal than they ever have been. Your symptoms are "typical" of celiac disease and I would highly recommend being tested. There are several different blood tests that could screen you for celiac disease. They are fairly specific- it is a very good indicator of whether or not you do have celiac disease. The test results should be back within a week. I would recommend finding a doctor with a fairly good understanding of celiac disease that could help you understand all that it entails. For me it has been such a blessing to know that I have celiac disease. Knowing is the key to getting better and preventing any futher health complications. |

I Have had hypro thyroidism for 20 yrs. & my dr. just told me that I have celiac spure. they come hand in hand. you can also have depression with it. I've been on an antidepressant & sleeping pills for 14 yrs I'm also a borderline diabetic. you sound like you have all the classic symptons of celiac. the diarrhea that smells so bad, no appitite.
I would get the blood test as possiable it takes about a week for it to come back. than your DR. can send you to a GI. DR. for more testing.
Gatorade is bad for you drink lots of water .coke cola is g/f.
here are some things that will be helpful:
you can eat chicken, fish, & turkey all you want just trim all fats off of the meat & skinless is better. red meats you should only have 2 times a week. peanutbutter, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans are safe too. pretty much anything that is made of potatoes, rice ( of any kind ) & soy. no gravies that are already prepared. NO NO fried foods. . bake all foods or grill I use a rotisserie . no canned foods use frozen or fresh veggies. eat alot of salads no crutons only lite vinager dressings.

they will do an endo. test they will put you to sleep it only takes 10 min. that is they take biopies of your stomach & small intestions. it is nothing to be scared of it is easy. the only thing that you have to worry about is if you have to get a colon osc. done it is not nothing to worry about it is just the prep that is not so great, you better not leave the bathroom the day of your prep.
all the test that they do for celiac & spure is nothing to get upset about be happy that you now know what is wrong with you. and you can now deal with it. Good Luck |

Yup - thats correct. I had them do both at the same time. I said as long as I'm out you might as well have your way with me!!! The prep is the worst!! Fleet is the stuff you want to drink to clean you out for the colo. It's a small little bottle you mix with a glass of clear liquid. It's beats the GoLytly stuff!!!
Try not to worry - you'll be fine. Let us know how things went.
Good luck!!! _________________ Al

They can start with an a blood test to see if you are positive for the celiac antibody. After that it is wise to have an endoscopy to confirm the Celiac Disease. I went to a new doctor again today, I have been dealing with diarrhea for 10 months, but just found out I had celiac a few months ago. No one told me that it was so serious that I stop ingesting gluten. That is why I changed doctors! He did a full blood work up on my nutrient levels. Hopefully they are improving. The stools seem to be a little better.
And I thought I did so well over Thanksgiving, but come to find out the turkeys that are injected with a self basting solution, have gluten. I was upset! But I know now, fresh turkey from now on! Stay away from meats that are injected!

thanks for the advice and info. I am still VERY nervous. I hate being put to sleep I wake up sick to my stomach and have a hard time waking up. Do I have to have the test done? Cant I just start the gluten free diet if the blood test comes back postitive?
I went today and got the blood work done. They tested for Antibodies to celiac and then they also checked my white blood count and red and they did a blood test to test for inflamation. So now it is a wait and see game. This diarrhea is driving me crazy not to metion wearing me out. I do not know how you delt with it for that long I have only been dealing with it for 6 weeks now. UGH and it came on all at once. I mean earlier in my life and before this happened I would have stomach upsets and diarrhea but it would eventually go away but this has not. This morning was rough thought I would never get done going. It was back and forth to the bathroom all morning. UGH it is Christmas time and I feel so down from this and VERY scared because I do not know what is going on with me. Wish me luck this next week of waiting. thanks |

Hang in there, it is very tough until you can get the endoscopy done, but once that is over with you can start the diet and start feeling better.
I remember when my daughter's doctor first told us she may have Celiac, we went out and bought a whole bunch of gluten free food (well what we could find). She started feeling a bit better but then we were told she would have to wait to start the diet until after the endoscopy and it took over a month to get an appointment. After it was over with and she could really start the diet, she started feeling a whole lot better.
Recovery is different with everyone, but don't get discouraged, it will get better and once you start feeling better you'll be glad you were diagnosed. It sounds strange to say you are glad you've been diagnosed with a disease, but once that's done you can get on with healing and feeling better.
This is our first GF holiday season and it is hard not eating all the usual goodies, but we are finding substitutes that are just as good.
Good luck with the waiting, let us know when the results come back! |

If you stay away from gluten you will feel better than ever . I'm still being tested for chron's now. I have 6 enlarged lymnods in my stomach. I've been to the cancer DR. 2 times they say to give it 2 months to see if the lymnods grow in the mean time I'm in pain all the time, weak. but I still am gluten free I fell better that way. my stools are getting better, no sick feeling to my stomach. but I'm still losing the weight. my DR says that I should gain 10 pounds to get back to normal weight. my nutrisiost says to eat 6 small meals a day. I do that & still I can't gain any weight. I'm afaid that If they find chron's it will be all over. My Maternal Grandmother had stomach cancer & died at the age of 34. I'm only 38 and not ready for anything like that yet. I just pray everyday because I have 3 teenagers at home & an adult son & 6 grandchildern to watch grow up I think that Is what makes me keep going.
good luck with all your test keep going strong & think positive |
