We are approaching our family Christmas get together.
Oplatki is a tradition from my husband's Polish side and we
LOVE breaking it together @ Christmas. What can we use
as an alternative? With traditional oplatki there is a pink
wafer for the heads of the households and white ones for
everyone else.
Wasn't sure what category to put this in! |

Hi ONHI,
Since I am not Polish, I did not know what a Oplatki is. So I did a google
I don't know how this fits in with your religion (I'm guessing Catholic), but it appears to be similar to a Communion Host. Many Catholics believe the communion host MUST contain wheat. I'm also guessing this is not a problem it this case..since it's probably not consecreted. Sorry for the babbling...
Would any wafer/cracker type product work?
It appears these are just flour & water...hmmm...you could try making your own with GF flours & water. You'd need some Xanthan gum or Guar Gum to make them stick together (or maybe some egg). You could add some food coloring to get the pink colors.
Or...have you ever tried Chebe bread? This can be rolled out very thin and baked for crackers.
http://www.enabling.org/ia/celiac/communion.html - if you scroll all the way down in this doc, you'll see some communion wafer recipes.
No worries on the category thing... _________________ Al

When I take communion at my church, I take my own Soy Crisp cracker and use a piece of it as the body of Christ. I ask the Lord to consecrate it and He does. This works for me and I pray that it will work for you. Blessings of a wondrous Christmas for us all! _________________ Carolyn

In the gf section of health food stores is a rice cracker that resembles a white "scrubbie" pad. I don't remember the brand. They have no taste, HOWEVER, they measure about 5"x7", which is a perfect size for breaking and sharing. Only slightly smaller than the "regular" oplatek (singular). That might work for you. If the color is important to you, you could probably mist it with a little food colored water. _________________ The Love we withhold is the pain that we carry.

Yes, it is a Catholic tradition. Our family now are born again Believers but it is still a tradition we want to carry on. We will find or more likely make an alternative for next year.
I have been keeping almonds in my purse to use for the Lord's Suppertable at our place of worship. To me it doesn't matter right now that it is not "bread" since it is merely a symbol. It's the heart issue that matters more. Plus the almonds don't get stale in my purse! |
