I accidentally bought the wrong kind of cheese curls for my daugher. The list says Cheetos is okay but I had a momentary brain fog and bought Jax brand and of course she ate the whole bag!!
She is supposed to have her blood levels retested in February. Does anyone know if this is enough time for it to get out of her system if these are not GF?

| Actually, the gluten will eventually diasappear from your system as long as you are not eating it. I'm just wondering how long it takes to do that, if it will be gone by February. |

If gluten stayed on your system forever then I think I am doomed. I couldn't see why we should be on a gluten free diet if that were the case!!! Maria? Where did you hear this from?
I think the first thing to find out is to call the company and see if it in gluten free. I wish i knew how long it stayed in your system so I am sorry i couldn't answer your question. perhaps a quick call to your doctor would be in order. hopefully someone here will have an answer for you. I would like to know myself. Anyone?

Hi Cynmis,
I have a question...your daughter has ALREADY been dx'ed, right?? If she HAS NOT been dx'ed - then you want to be eating gluten in order for the blood tests to be accurate. FYI - for a gluten challenge (if I remember correctly) you need to be consuming about 35grams (a bagel) a day for 6 weeks. I suspect you're doing a follow up test to see if the antibody levels have gone down.
How long will the gluten stay in your system?? I really don't know the answer to that. I'm sure it's different for everybody. I'll have to poke around and see if I can find an answer. To my knowledge - gluten does not stay in your system. If it did - you'd never get better
Hey don't be too hard on yourself - this stuff takes time. Everybody makes mistakes.
Good luck in Feb!! _________________ Al

Hi Al,
Yes she has been diagnosed but her last set of tests still showed some antibodies and her doctor wants her levels down to normal which means absolutely no gluten.
She had been gluten free for about 3 1/2 months before her last set of tests and they were almost normal, so I think she'll be okay because it is still 3 months away from now. I guess I just panicked because we were doing so good and I can't believe I made such a dumb mistake.
Thanks for any info and your encouragement. |

I I'm new here, but not new to CD dx for 15 months. I belong to another forum also, called delphi forum, and listserv, both very helpful forum, with great helpful people. You might try either of these to find your answer. Gluten doesn't stay in your system forever, but the damage it causes is deadly. The mistake could raise your daughter levels if she eat any. I suggest whenever your not sure of the product check with the company, products change from time to time so its so important that we keep posted to any changes. Take care hope this has helped.
Hope

Gluten absolutely does not stay in our systems. Everything I've read (and that's significant) indicates that the gluten leaves your body after a period of time that varies from person to person. I've heard 3 days to a year. I wouldn't worry too much about the gluten your daughter ate - mistakes will happen on this crazy diet. At least you're now aware of it for the next time.
I have a question for you. Was your daughter diagnosed with the endoscopy or just the blood tests? I'm having both of my kids tested via the blood tests. I find the endoscopy to be too invasive for them. However, my concern is that a positive result doesn't necessarily mean they have it. My father and I both have it and my kids are symptom-free for now. I'd hate to put them on the diet if they don't necessarily have the disease. What does everyone else think about testing kids for CD? |

| I have had all 4 of my kids tested I'm waiting for the results now. My 1 daughter had an endo & colon osc done in 1 day at our childrens hospital. results r still pending. I don't see any reason for u not to get ur kids tested. there r plenty of pedatric GI Dr. out there that will only test kids if there blood test come back positive. And a gluten free diet will never hurt anyone. |

Monica,
Have you read anything lately on the accuracy of the blood tests? I've read that they are now "at least" 95%-98% accurate, and that of those false results, it mostly indicated false negatives with only a very few false positives. Since the blood tests are no big deal, why not just go with that and trust the results unless you see a reason not to? If they turn up negative then that's great, unless of course you see things that would suggest otherwise. It would probably be smart to have them re-tested when they have their normal annual check-ups just to keep a check on things, since it can hide for a while before rearing it's ugly head. If the results indicate positive then you can go from there. Whatever your view on the biopsy, it won't hurt to at least get the blood tests for now. You don't want to force unnessicary restrictions on their diets, but I'm sure you would also rather not delay or inhibit any would-be normal developments. I read that in some countries, I think Italy was one, children are tested annually until a certain age, so it's caught before it has a chance reak much havoc. If I had children, that's what I would do. I would ask for the blood tests at their annual check-ups to keep watch for it, and if the need for a biopsy was indicated, I would just deal with that when the time came - at least the blood tests will give you a place to start. _________________ Sarah

eating basic foods seems to be the key for a GF diet.
there are so many basics:eggs, milk, cheese, ice cream, chocolate, meat, fish, chicken, turkey, vegetables(plain),and plain fruit
