I'm not sure that Mike's Hard Lemonade, and other similar hard liquor based pre-packaged drinks are really malt based.

Yes, malt based products are can contain gluten. However, these alcoholic drinks are labeled as "Malt based" for a legal reason, not because they needed to be malt based. Beer (malt based) can be sold in single serving bottles, and need not be sold in a liquor store. Many, if not most states, require that liquor only be sold only through liquor stores. Thus, when the hard liquor beverages where developed, the legal teams use the "malt beverage" definition to allow them to be sold alongside beer. Beer, or other beverage which is higher than some certain proof of alcohol, can't be called beer and must be called a "malt beverage". For example, some really good beers like "Elephant" and "Brador" and some others are called "malt beverage" when in Canada and Europe they would be called beer.

Now, I'm not saying that there isn't Malt in these drinks.

Someone should get an official answer from the manufacturers as to wether a given product is Gluten Free.

I have a skin reaction to gluten. It doesn't sound like the descriptions of DH, but I've never had it biopsied. It effects the same area on the backs of my hands every time and takes about three weeks to go away completely.

If I have wheat based vodka, my hands break out within 10 minutes. You can actually sit there and watch it happen. If I have potato based or grape based vodka it doesn't happen. It doesn't happen with any other kind of alcohol either.

I tend to be pretty sensitive to gluten in general. I'm wondering if you tested wheat based vodka it would come in under 20ppm, but more than 10ppm.

All in all, it doesn't make sense to me that this happens because of the size of the filters and the size of the gluten. But maybe it's just a matter of filters get worn and the holes in them might not be as small as they once were when the filter was new. Or maybe small piece of the gluten part can get through. Not enough to effect most people, but just a few. For me, it's not worth it because that skin reaction hurts like heck for a few days. Then it just looks ugly. Fun...

Hey, gives me an excuse to be all fancy and order Ciroc (made from grapes) instead of just whatever they want to bring me. Very Happy

Nancy- what brands of vodka do you react to? What about gins?

Do you stay away from distilled vinegars too? If so what brands do react to, what brands don't you react to?

I know weird huh?

I've always just used the heinz white vinegar and occasionally some rice vinegar. So that doesn't help clear up the mystery because both of them are safe. I've never had any problems with foods that are otherwise gluten free but also contain unverified vinegar. I don't even ask about the vinegar when verifying products.

I don't like gin, but my husband drinks it on occasion. I thought gin was made from something else. ?

Absolut was what I reacted to for sure. There were a few others I tried at the time I was trying to figure out if it was vodka or potential gluten or ?. Can't remember anymore what any of them were. The only connection was wheat-based vodkas that gave me the reaction. I also get this skin reaction when glutened by food although it doesn't happen as quickly. So it's not just the vodka that does it.

One of my first food allergies was Gin. Horrible silver dollar-sized hives under the skin. It's the juniper berries in it my body doesn't like. This may be the same for you.
