Hi
Recently diagnosed and feeling a bit depressed and alone. I'm the only one in my family that I know of. I've talked to everyone and when I mention Celiac..they look at me like I have a third eye! I travel alot for my job and am scared whether or not I should even attempt eating. Everytime I have eaten out, which I have to do on the road, I get sick. I try to make good choices, atleast I think they are, and then I get sick after 2 bites. Can anyone make me feel better emotionally? Tips...etc would be helpful. Just need to not feel alone.
Thank you so much and Merry Christmas to all.
Kim

Hi Kim,

Welcome to the board! I am sorry to hear that. Sad But fear not!! You have found us Smile You are no longer alone. We have all been thru what you are going thru right now. Please just try to be calm about it...it's not the end of the world...really...it's not...you'll be fine. It just takes some time.

Eating out is tricky. It already looks like you've been poking thru the Dining Out forum. There's a lots of place with GF menus. Hey...there's always McDonanld's French Fries (they have dedicated friers - no gluten items are fried in the same grease).

Have you seen Our Thread on GF Diet Boot Camp? Please check it out. It covers LOTS of the basics.

Something else that might help is Our Path's to Gluten Free-dom Thread. These are stories of how we got to where we are today. Feel free to add your own if you'd like Smile

Please feel free to ask any questions. More than likely we've all probably asked the same question as we were starting out.

I wish you well in your GF Journey!! We'll help ya any way we can Very Happy

Welcome Newbie. At this point, I'm sure EVERYTHING is overwhelming but it gets better--I promise. For now stick to fresh fruits and vegetables and meat seasoned with only salt and pepper 'til you get a little more comfortable with the concepts. There's a LOT of information out there but you don't have to learn ALL of it all at once. Start with a basic list of do's and don'ts--you'll find them farther along in this forum. Take a deep breath, relax and prepare to feel much better. I've only been GF for about 3 months and it's made all the difference in the world. I thought I would crave all those foods I've lived on--but I don't. You'll come to realize it's just not worth the misery. And the people on this forum are FANTASTIC at answering your questions and concerns. Good luck.

Hi KIm, and welcome to the board.

Yes, it's quite daunting at first. But believe it or not, in no time it'll be second nature. THe most important thing is to follow the diet to the letter, to get yourself feeling better asap!

As far as being the only one in your family, well, one of your parents has this disease -- they GAVE IT to you! Laughing (And they might want to be tested -- only half of celiacs has GI symptoms, so other problems can turn out to be celiac disease.)

Oh, we all know the "third eye" feeling . . . at work, with friends, etc.

You have lots to learn about how to avoid the gluten -- as you say, you think should be safe isn't -- it either has gluten (intentionally) or you're getting cross-contamination. THis can happen at restaurants, people's homes (they make a "safe" salad on a board that has had bread cut on it), and even at the most well-intentioned family members' homes.

When I travel, I bring what I can (some cereal or bread), and buy the rest at supermarkets. My hotel room is always stocked with stuff from the local grocery store -- there is lots you can buy that's safe.

My best advice right now is to start reading these boards -- there is LOTS of advice that you can read and start putting to good use! Laughing

Again, welcome -- hang around here lots and you'll be learning all sorts of new stuff!

HAppy holidays,

Lexi

Excellent advice! You can also throw in some baked potatoes or a bowl of white rice, if you feel hungry missing the starchy foods.

Hi Kim! Welcome to the best place on the internet to learn about Celiac. I'm not celiac, but my husband has been for 24 years. Take heart, dear one, it won't always feel so daunting. Plain meats and veggies to start will make your beginnings into the gluten free world much easier to start with. Read as much as you can on this forum and you'll learn that there are lots of foods you can find that are made for gluten free people. Pasta, cookies, baked goods, breads just to name a few. Ask ANY questions you may have - everyone here is so helpful and supportive.

I have been totally GF for a year & a half now & really you do not crave the things you cannot have. I know it sounds crazy but it is true.

People that are not GF just do not get it. They think we are tempted by a donut or bread or something, all the things they know we used to love. But the truth is that you will get to where the sight of such things almost makes you sick.

I've found that to be true, and even when I have the GF goodies, I don't care for them like I used to. I made cookies for the holidays -- four or five kinds that I used to consume in good-sized quantities! But I just didn't really care for them -- ate some, but nothing like I used to! Laughing

Hi Kim,
I just was diagnosed a few weeks ago myself. The first few weeks were unbelievably sad and dificult. I didn't think I was going to be able to do it.
One of the things that got me through it was going to restaurant websites and looking up the nutritional information. Believe it or not, a lot of them have gf info. P.F. Changs and Don Pablo's have a lot of items on their menu. Also I eat Chipotle burrito bowl and seem to be fine. The hard part for me is having to plan ahead... I have always been the type of person to eat out. Now I am learning how to cook, and prepared an entirely gf Christmas dinner for myself and my friend!!!! (Baking is hit or miss, but I'm learning)
I am not devestated and scared anymore. It's amazing how quickly a persons ability to cope with something changes when their mindset improves. I started to realize just how much is out there that I can eat!!!
Good luck, and please remember that you are NOT ALONE!!!! Even though we all have different stories, the endings are all the same. Take care and Merry Christmas!!!!

Hi Kim,

I felt really bad emotionally for a while after diagnosis. Going into a grocery store or restaraunt was really hard and emotional. Having my freedom of choice taken away really bugged me.

Your family will get it together and others will adapt. I find it helpful to clearly explain what you have and what you have been going though.

This disease could be much worse. At least it is managed by diet alone and can be dealt with. Join a Celiac group for additional support. GIG has been good for me. Shopping at Whole Foods and eating out at PF Chang's & Outback has been a Godsend.

You have friends here. Merry Christmas!

Very Happy Thank you all so much for taking time out of your busy lives to make a "newbie" feel better. I have to say that I have survived my first GF christmas!! I even managed to cook for everyone the way I needed to eat and told them if they wanted anything containing the ingredients I could not have, to please prepare and bring them from their home. I did not get sick and feel amazingly ..thin!! Laughing It's not that I'm hungry, it's just that I cooked a pecan pie for my youngest...couldn't eat it...make a vegan pumpkin pie for my oldest..couldn't eat it..(graham crust) and I felt a little left out..but you know what? I quit smoking 3 months ago..if I can do that..I can do anything. Thank you for all the wonderful advice. The big test will be when I have to work out of town next week for a couple of days...I have decided that a hotel with a microwave, refrigerator..and good local grocery store will suffice for me!! I'm just not ready to take any chances eating out. I'll let everyone know how it goes!! I hope you all had a Merry Christmas..and have a blessed New Year
Kim

Get the book "Gluten Free Bible". It has a ton of good info and recipies. It will help you deal with the emotional stuff too.

You can make the pies without the crust. My wife makes a mean Pumpkin Cheesecake and just leaves the crust part out. There are a ton of good Gluten Free cookbooks. I'm sure I remember a Gluten Free pie crust recipe in one of them. You will learn what to do and where to buy the things you need quickly. It takes some time and research at first.

If you have a Whole Foods near you, they are very aware and helpful to Celiacs.

Happy New Years!! Very Happy

Speaking of books. Another MUST read for someone just starting out is Wheat Free, Worry Free by Danna Korn. It covers all aspects of GF living.

Very much worth the price. If you are short on cash...I bet a good library would have it.

I just ordered the wheat free worry free book. I read some reviews on barnes and noble.com and this book seems to cover everything. I hope I made a good choice. Just curious, can anyone tell me whether or not I can have non dairy creamer? I have had conflicting things told to me and I want to do this completly right..no surprises. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks again...your all life savers!! Smile

Hi Kim,

You won't be sorry for order that book! It explains things so well, that you can give it to other family members so they understand whats going on too. I gave it to my Mother to read.

Hmmm, I don't drink coffee, so I don't know much about non-dairy creamer (without looking things up). I'd look a few things up, but I'm in the middle of making a stained glass humming bird - I stopped by because I had to print out another pattern. Smile Hopefully some of the others will chime in Smile

BTW...Lifesavers (the candy) are GF too Laughing

Keep up the good work!
