Boo hoo! I am so sad. Wendy's is getting rid of their broccoli and cheese and bacon and cheese potatoes. I saw a posting on Delphi and couldn't believe it, so I called the Wendy's corporate office and they confirmed it. Seems they are not going to be using that type of cheese anymore. There is no susnet date, it will be happening different times at different restaurants.

Not that I eat out that much, but it was nice to have a place with more than a few choices. Sigh...

That is a bummer. I was talking to my cousin who has diabetes and told her that when I go with the family I have to be sure to bring something for me to eat that is GF if we plan on stopping at a fastfood place for a quick hamburger or something. She said to be careful as she did that once and the manager came out and asked her to leave. The manager said it was a health violation, and that customers were not allowed to bring outside food in. Have you ever heard of that? With so many food courts now a days that seems a little odd to me.

Hi,

Yup...I believe it maybe a state law that prohibits us from taking food in. Do I do it..yup. I take in my own dressing. Has anyone ever said anything - not yet. We talked to a caterer last year about this. She said she'd look the other way because we've used her in the past and knows us...but legally...she'd be on the hook for ANYTHING that happened foodwise. So, anyone that brought food to this large family function...as most times people do...if someone broke a tooth on Aunt Mable's 47 Nut Brownies...the caterer would be liable. Sad but true...

Sorry to hear about the potatoes. Is it ALL baked taters that will be disappearing or just those toppings?

I got one of the cheese/broccoli potatoes Sunday assuming it was shredded cheese and not a cheese sauce. I was surprised to find it was a sauce and concerned it had gluten in it! I was pleased when I did not get sick and doubly pleased that there would be more selection for me at fast food when I must eat it. What a cruel thing! Thumb's down to Wendy's!!! Mad

By the way, Arby's carries baked potatoes, but I don't know about the gluten-free issue. Guess I'd better find out!

Just received this email from Arby's:

Dear "isto:"

Your request for information posed to the Arby's Guest Feedback system was forwarded to me, Charles Papa, Food Safety and Regulatory Affairs Compliance Officer for Arby's Restaurant Group, Inc. Thank you for your interest in Arby's, and especially for considering our menu as something that might meet the dietary need you indicate. ... I imagine you ask this for either yourself or someone dear to you.

Baked Potatoes are certainly gluten-free, making the rather short list that I offer whenever this question comes up (see below).

Gluten-free:
Proteins, without bread or buns: roast beef, ham and turkey. [No chicken items, including even diced and grilled.]
Cheeses, natural and processed.
Peppered bacon.
Baked potatoes only [Plain, or with butter and gluten-free seasonings. About 50% of our restaurants offer baked potatoes.]
Fresh Fruit Cup. [In 2006, as part of our new program for Arby's Kids Meals; contains diced apples and grapes, that can be ordered as a side.]
Milkshakes.

I cannot recommend any of the other potato products, though, because, in their cooking at the restaurant, there is the chance they will share fryer-space with wheat flour-based coated items. And then (you should be made aware of this) the Curly Fries are coated, and there is gluten added as a part of that formulation and preparation by our supplier. Their preparation in the same oil as that used for Homestyle Fries and Potato cakes takes out all three as gluten-free options.

Again, "isto," thank you for your interest in Arby's. I will see to it that the Arby's website soon contains a quick drop-down list where you can learn of any new items that are suitable for you or your loved one. If you need any further information or additional details, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Charles Papa, Ph.D.
