My frustration with my family is different. A few months ago my mother was diagnosed with celiacs, and a few weeks ago my sister and I found out that we also have celiacs. My mother and sister both have many symptoms, but I don’t, not the usual profile anyway. I’m frustrated because I’m the one with no symptoms and I’m the most careful about eating gluten-free. My mother and sister basically don’t “believe” in cross-contamination. My sister made pizzas over the weekend (both GF and non-GF) and the two kinds were touching! She’ll also use a toaster at work that everyone uses and sees no problem with this. It frustrates me because I can’t force her to be more careful, but I don’t like her risking her health like that! My mom is the same, she makes GF and non-GF bread in the same bread maker! I don’t understand them. What’s the point of going through all the trouble of eating GF if you’re going to keep ingesting small amounts of gluten all the time… Also, I’m going to have a hard time explaining to them that I’m worried about being contaminated when they’re supposedly serving all GF meals! Hopefully they’ll figure it out or start listening to me!

To be honest I was so shocked I didn't insist. I want to make sure I understand everything perfectly myself before I present my argument so that I don't loose credibility.

Thank you for the tips. Once I'm satisfied with my own understanding I'll tackle my family!

Just remember: you can only do so much. Once you reach a certain point you go from concerned to nagging/annoying, and you're not accomplishing anything. Just do what you can. Smile

Are your mom and sis planning to get repeat bloodwork at 6 months? That is what is recommended. The proof will be in the pudding if their numbers are still elevated because they are ingesting small amounts of gluten.

I know you are only kidding BUT when my dd was 2, she got the tip off a bottle of visine (I was actually standing next to her and didn't realize it) and took a little sip. I didn't think it was a big deal but called poison control to "reassure" myself. Umm, they told me to drive her to the nearest hospital as quick as I could. We tricked her into ingesting charcol with chocolate syrup but after two hours of observation, she started yelling, running around and hitting doctors and then collapsed, her blood pressure plummeted to next to nothing and she was almost coma-like.

Luckily she came out of it unscathed BUT I was informed that .25 milligrams of visine is enough to kill at 30 lb child and isn't something to mess around with. I'm sorry to sound like I'm lecturing but this is something that I try to inform everyone of when the subject comes up.

This is really sad! I am vegan so I always get the typical slew of stupid questions. Especially since I am an ethical vegan everyone is always horribly offended.

I never thought that they would get angry about someone doing something for serious health reasons! That is completely ridiculous. What do they want? Do they want you to on meds that don't work and will just give you side effects that will put you on more meds? Thats why the cost of health care is so freaking expensive. Stupid people who don't want to take care of themselves!!!
