Something's going on at McDonalds...2 out 3 places say that their fries are NOT GF. I have emailed them (no response yet), others have called them and said that it is true...their fries have wheat.

If this is true...I will be very sad Sad Crying or Very sad Evil or Very Mad

That stinks! Sad

It's also quite interesting because, when my boyfriend and I went out to eat recently at Joe's American Cafe & Grill, the waiter informed me that I could *not* have the fries that came with my meal. Instead, he gave me the option of steamed rice or broccoli...which, if you think about it, is actually much better for me anyway! Laughing

Apparently, the fries were dusted in flour or something before going into the fryer. At least, that was the case at that particular restaurant...

I guess this means no more fries anywhere, huh? Confused

I'd never eat fries anywhere else. 1) possible flour dusting 2) contamination of the oil.

It was always nice to be able to stop at McD's and get a burger and fries...almost any where I went.

*comforts Al*

I guess I'll just have to remember to keep some Think Thin bars and some rice cakes or soy crisps in the car or in my work bag with me at all times! Rolling Eyes

This is so sad. One of the few things that helps my son feel normal is getting to have happy meals (without the bun, of course). Oh, well, I guess I will have fewer crappy little plastic toys cluttering up my house. **sigh**

I just talked to someone at McD's. There has not been a change in the product itself. They need to declare this as part of the food labeling laws. Their suppliers say that natural flavoring does contain wheat & dairy products BUT, the processing of it removes the wheat & dairy proteins. I questioned further, but the rep. does not know the details. How the proteins are removed...I could not find out. I wonder if there is some distilling process they do?

This would probably explain why it is still listed on the GF menu. If the proteins are really removed...that's fine...but HOW are they removed.

Boy...I still have questions...it's frustrating not to be able to get them answered. Mad

I suspect we will find more of this...things that were or maybe still are GF, but they now are disclosing/clarifying this info. Grrrrr

Interesting. I had McD's French Fries last Friday. I didn't get sick from them!

Well if they have changed nothing in how they are made and such, is there a reason to give them up! I mean, they are the same as they have always been, right?

You are correct Monica...nothing has changed. They are exactly the same. This is only a clarification of ingredients. We will see this again. With the new laws, companies will be disclosing all sorts of info now. Just like McD's has done. I suspect info was disclosed to them...so they have passed it on down. Are they really GF??? I'm still reserving judgement yet.

I think in some cases will we have to make tough judgement calls on things. We'll have to try to figure out whats a CYA statement and what's not. This is not to say we haven't had to deal with the before, because we have. I think it will come down to a much more of a detailed level now. In cases like this...we don't know HOW those peptides are supossedly removed. In my head, if they could tell how they are removed, I then could make a much better informed decision on it.

Personally, I'd love to know the exact parts per million. That way I can determine myself what I feel is correct. Currently Canada has GF set at 20 ppm (Kinnickinck products come from Canada and we all rave about them). Many, many people have no trouble with consuming that amount of gluten. From what I remember even non gluten bearing foods can test with some levels of gluten. I want to say like 3-4 ppm. (I think I read this when GIG was doing that survey on "what GF meant to you".)

Ahhh yes...what fun this is... Rolling Eyes

I see that they pulled French Fries off the GF Menu. You'll need to go to the bottom and download it...then you'll get the one dated 2/7/06.

I think I can say with absolute certainty that McD's fries are GF. I react to any amount of gluten (even to Kinnikinnick bagels occasionally), but have never had a reaction to McD's fries. I am one of those with the non-GI symptoms, and I develop an arrhythmia (atrial fibrillation) within minutes upon consuming gluten, so it's always very clear what's causing it. Every couple of weeks, when taking my granddaughter out and about with me, we stop for her favorite snack (McD's fries), and I always eat a couple out of her bag. NEVER a reaction, at all. (Now, if one were eating at a McD's without a dedicated fryer, I wouldn't recommend eating the fries, but if they're cooked separately, you should have no problem.)

Just my two cents worth on the topic . . .

Yes, I'm the "early warning system" that they mention in your wiki article, right? LOL! It's really rotten being so sensitive, and having this kind of reaction. I'd give anything if I could dare to go out to eat, knowing I'd "only" have a week of pain and stomach problems! Laughing No, I'm not saying what any of you go through is fun, but this lands me in a hospital as quick as the ambulance can arrive. Sucks, really.
