www.diageo.com I have found Diageo very helpful and very quick to respond to my requests. This is not been the case when dealing with other spirit mfgs.

I was just at one of the Diageo distilleries/plants earlier in the week. I had no idea they produced so many different products. FWIW, I would have had an easier time getting into Fort Knox than I did their main office. Didn't help matters that my driver's license is MIA.

We you there on business or for a tour? Did they give out free samples? Wink

I was there for a business meeting. I doubt they give tours based on the security measures they take. From when I first arrived at the guard house it took me 30 minutes to get to the office of the person whom I was meeting with. I had to pass through 3 different checkpoints. The same when I left except I had to get out of my car at the guard house while they inspected the contents of the vehicle.

You're right! That's only a partial listing of the products they manufacture.

No, but my absolute favorite flavor of yogurt EVER that I can't have anymore because of the nutrasweet is pina colada, so it looks like I'm going to have to move to the real thing. Doesn't hurt that I'm about to spend 3 months in Hawaii. Mmm, hope it's as good as the yogurt. The sad thing is that I'm 23, but I didn't want to start drinking when I already looked like I had a bad hangover most mornings. Now I can party like a rock star and everyone will think I'm just "normal" the next day hehe.

I have a few friends that will find this absolutely hilarious. Must skip beer and go directly to mixed drinks.

Updated the list.

Interesting...

Diageo sold Malibu Rum back in 2002!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1844577.stm

Quote:
The UK drinks giant Diageo has agreed to sell its Malibu coconut rum brand to rival Allied Domecq for £560m ($800m).

As of July 2005 - Pernod Ricard owns Allied Domecq.

I suspect they did the same for Appleton Estates Rum too.

I'm happy to see Bailey's on the list yet. I used to like putting a bit in with Coffee every so often, but have not had it in years. I may just have to get some for the holidays now. Thanks for keeping that list up-to-date Al.

OK - here's the reply on Appleton Estates Rum dated 11/13/06.

Hello Al,

Thank you for taking the time to write.

Appleton Rum is made from sugar cane and molasses and is gluten free. If you have further questions you may want to consult with your doctor.

Thanks once again for writing.

This was the answer I suspected, but I didn't want to say until verified.

I'm a big fan of Chopin potato-based vodka. It's about $20 o so per 750 ml, and being a clear liquor, it's quite versatile with club soda and lime or just dry vermouth and a couple of olives.

I haven't seen anything here on Bombay gins. I was quite fond of the Bombay Sapphire. Of course, gins are all grain-based -- as is the case with most other distilled spirits -- but I also understand that distillation prevents the gluten molecule from entering the finished product because it's too big to pass through.

I always avoid products with additives that don't account for themselves - nasty things that hide behind banal labels such as caramel coloring, natural flavorings, modified food starch etc. In distilled spirits, however, proprietary production methods prevent distillers form telling you very much at all.

Best advice -- keep it basic. When I face a question that cannot be answered, I'll just have a glass of wine, or uncork a Champagne.

And then there is Anheuser-Busch's Redbridge beer, made from sorghum (a cousin of corn), and its label clearly states it is wheat-and-barley free.

It is meant for people who have gluten sensitivities, and it is an OK beer -- first I've had in five months so it was a a real treat!

That said, please drink responsibly and be safe!
