Thanks for all the replies. Smile I've found some gf ice cream. It was at my supermarket (BI-LO for those in OZ). I'm wondering if it still ok to eat it, as some of the ingredients sound a bit sus. (suspicious) Confused
Brand Name is 'Columbo' Simply Vanilla.

The ingredients are: water, skim milk powder, glucose syrup, sugar, humectant (1200), multidextin, dextrose monohydrate, emulsifiers (171, 435), vegetabe gums, (410, 412< 407), thickener (466), flavouring, culture. Milk fat less than 1%.

I guess I'll have to go a lactose tolerance test soon too, just in case Crying or Very sad

Hi Maggie,

The ingredient that sticks out to me is "flavouring" - many times it can be hidden in there. The other thing is the thickener (code #466).

Hmmm some where I ran across a food additive chart the explains all those codes....

OK - I think I'm going crazy!! I edited my post to Maggie the other day to include this...I did I really did!! Smile Cuz, I had to go find my post from another board and paste it in. Oh Well...

Well, here it is again...

It really doesnt say if they are GF or not...it just lists and explains them.

Several sites (a lot in Australia & NZ) that lists & describes Food Additives. I know most stay away from this stuff...but I thought it was interesting.

I've noticed this before that Oz & NZ are quite open about labeling & listing things. Do they have better (or different) laws there?

Since I'm still pretty new to all of this and undergoing more tests (yuck), i've obviously gotten myself into something that wasn't good for me. I had been strictly following the GF diet and feeling pretty good. I was enjoying life for the first time in a couple of years.

My husband and I travel a lot. Sunday at noon we ate at a Bob Evans. I thought I had asked all the right questions and finally settled on roasted pork without gravy, mashed potatoes again with no gravy which they assured me were the real thing and broccoli. Then I had a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I felt fine until late last night (Mon) then the stomach pain started followed by an evening with John.

Sorry I'm getting so wordy. Does stress play a part in this? Because yesterday my day started off, before I was even out of bed with a phone call from my daughter sobbing (her cat was dying and we had to have her put to sleep). But it brought back all the emotional stress I faced over the last couple of years. My dad was diagnosed with brain cancer 9/02, my mom died of a heart attack 5/03, I finally lost my dad 1/04, then I lost a brother and my own cat. That's why the doctors kept telling me I was more sick in the head instead of the stomach.

Anyway, sorry I'm so wordy. Sounds like it could have been ice cream from reading the posts here, but it took too long. So how about stress figuring in this disease?

ive always wondered if stress is causing some of the stomach trouble too
i cant get a straight answer
i just started seeing a chiropractor
who focuses on nutrition
im at witts end with a headache that will not go away

Hi Janet,

Sorry to hear you were having such a crappy day Sad Your gastro problems might be ice cream related or maybe gluten cross contamination. One thing you could do is get some GF ice cream and eat it at home. That way you have a bit more control over what your eating.

Stress..ah yes...the docs will blame everything on stress. Does it cause CD?? I don't know if anyone really knows for sure. (I suspect it doesn't help!!). Will stress cause a flare in your symptoms? - I suspect so - at least it did with me.

As for the time lag...everybody is different in how they react.

Good luck. I hope things go better for you tomorrow!!!

Yes, they love to blame everything on stress. . . . When I did my original research on CD, I read somewhere on the web that severe emotional stress can actually trigger the disease if it has been laying in wait. And my problems started when I found out my Daddy was going to die.

In any case, things are finally settling down.

Didn't think about cross contamination. I've still got a lot to learn. As I go back and click on all of your links Al, I learn more everyday. Thanks for all of your research! It makes it easier for us newbies.

Hi Janet,

I'm glad to hear that things are settling down for your. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Loosing a loved one is never easy.

CD is a genetic disease - you have a pre-disposition towards it. There is usually some event that triggers it, an illness, an infection, some trauma - and I supposed stress is in that category.

There is a steep learning curve to all this. It took me a good 3-6 months before I was completely comfortable with it.

I've often wondered what kind of role stress plays in Celiac, too. I experienced something rather traumatic and then new and unusual stress shortly before the big symptoms hit that sent me down such a long and painful road that ended in the dx of Celiac. I've not much doubt at all that those extreme stresses led to the accelerated development of Celiac.

I, too, have had a couple of flare ups that seemed to be stress. I was as certain as I could be that I had not ingested gluten, and I could find no other source or cause of the symptoms. I'm just so confused because I don't see how stress could trigger a Celiac flare up.

Here's my confusion: If someone is truly gluten free, they should not have a Celiac reaction. A Celiac reaction, or flare up, should require gluten, shouldn't it? The body can't just imagine that there's a toxin/poison/allergen present when there really isn't, can it? I know strange things can happen when you're under stress, but I just don't see how it would be possible for the body to react to something that isn't there.

My logical side says that stress cannot trigger a Celiac flare up; but my own experience and label-reading suggests otherwise.

Hi Sarah,

I need to clarify things a bit. I agree with you about stress triggering a flare...you are right there needs to be gluten (or some other "toxin").

In my head (as empty as it is at times), I was thinking back to my days when I was still sick. I was still having symptoms - and stress would magnify them. Now that I'm not sick (at least physically hehehe Smile), I don't get those flares - unless I eat something I shouldn't.

Wow, Sarah - your situation sounds incredibly familiar.

If only we knew the answer to the stress question! We could write a book and be millionaires...and healthy, too.

I was diagnosed with IBS about 20 years ago. So for 20 years I kind of bumped along, having occaisional symptoms, but learned to avoid certain things that seemed to make it worse. (Coffee, chocolate, OATMEAL....big hint there.)

In May of last year, I got really stressed out. I went to CA, bought a new house, moved with my husband, then started a new business with him. He's a doc, and I now manage his office, so this meant learning a whole new trade as well.

After a couple of months, I began to feel like I was poisoning myself. (I ate wheat cereal every morning...duh!) By mid-morning each day I'd be in the potty for the first of six-eight visits. I felt awful.

Then a flyer about CD came in the mail about a seminar at the hospital where my husband works. The light-bulb went on! I thought, hey, I've tried everything else. So, long story short - he went, I gave up wheat, and the future is bright again. I'm not symptom-free, but I feel A LOT better.

Sarah - I'm sure that your traumatic event and my stressful months set off the CD. Perhaps we should take up meditation!
