Spam spam spam!!!

Those that want to move if it comes to that, please send me your email address and I will let you know if I find a better place.

I have a place that I have been messing with that looks exactly like this place, so I may be getting that ready.

I knew this would be brought up. That's OK...I'm sure we can find a new if it comes to that.

Well, I can't believe it. How about thanks B. She has been banned from using my computer. I am so sorry. I now would like to know what else she has been up to. She told me to check to check the some of the latest posts. Just when I am feeling better I get bashed.

I don't know you (you show as guest) but if someone is using your computer in ways you don't like, you might want to set up a password to log into your computer, and also for internet access. Make sure to mix numbers and letters for the password and keep a copy of the password somewhere they won't find it. That will keep her from using the computer when you are not there. Sad

I think I've missed something. Are the comments in reaction to the spam that is all over this site?

Al, Is that why you're looking to set up another forum?

HI Confused TEC;

I'm confused as well. From what I can piece together, yes, it's about the SPAM attack. And someone signed in as a guest (above) saying God doesn't like us anymore (or similar), and someone else thinks they know who did it, and so they left a reply about it with someone's initial, but that someone says it wasn't them -- it was someone using their computer. (I think moderators can see IP addresses, so they might know what they're talking about.)

Am I getting it?? ANyone?

Oh my . . . what is happening here?

Equally confused Lexi

Hi Gang,

Sorry I have been absent. I was throwing a bachelor party for my brother. Smile

Yes, we are being plagued by massive amounts of spam. There is no way I can keep up. As I said before there are 30, 60, 100's of "people" posting this crap. Since I stopped removing them at 3:00 pm 3/4/06 - there are now 614 MORE! 2:04 am 3/5/06. It takes me about 10-15 seconds per post to remove...you do the math...THAT'S A LOT OF TIME!!

This is crippling.

I will not remove any more. I have ready spent 2.5 hrs removing posts already. I was up til 2:00 am Sat. morning removing the 1 salvo. I will not remove anymore until things are put in place to stop it or minimize it completely.

I think WE need to message Admin and nicely ask about putting those updates in to place. I suspect some of you have done it already. I know I have.

I will start backing things up so if a move does take place, I will have the important stuff.

Yes, spam is the ONLY reason that I would move. I don't want to move. It would only be a last resort. I would like to try to work things out with GF Pantry to get things in order. I think we get pretty good exposure. It comes up on google searches...we all know how much we (I) love google. Smile hehehehehe

Lexi is right, I can see the IP address (it like your house address) of the posters. So I know who is posting even though they don't sign in. I had forgotten the fact that some else was being allow to use another poster's machine. Yes...this same person had made other posts on this board...under another's account. It'd be like me signing in as Lexi and posting...saying anything I chose to. Everyone would think it's Lexi, but it's really me. (just to make things clear...a mod CAN NOT do that). Don't worry Guest #2, I know it is B that was posting - not you.

I have been looking into setting up another forum for quite some time. This whole spam thing has been bothering me since the start. As I said, it is the exact same software as this...it looks and acts identical..cuz it is!!! BUT...it is updated software...so it has several spam blocking things already built in. The only problem is it free. As we know free does come with a price...pop up's and ad's....this is something that I do not like. I think you can host an ad free board, but that costs money. Right now I do not remember how much.

I hope this clears some things up. Now...I must be off to bed.

Al, if you are serious about moving, the site that hosts my little forum is free.

It is set up so that you can make 'guest' posts impossible. you can ban users ip addresses if they post things that are contrary to the rules you set up.

If you are interested in checking it out, send me a PM and I will give you the information. (I can do a google search for the name of my forum and it comes up. I can also check it out by any of our users names and it comes up on google.)

Donna,
We've had our differences lately, but know that you can't be responsible for the actions of others. It seems to me that no one is holding you accountable for what Beth did. We can guide and encourage other people, but they will ultimately do what they want.

Perhaps changing your password may stop Beth from posting as you. No need to have a heartattack over something as small as this.

Al,
I'm still confused. Is GFP opposed to putting the measures in place that will help protect against spam? It seems to me the spam would be drastically reduced if 'guest' posting priviledges were revoked and everyone had to create an account with a valid email. Another thing that may help is if a person couldn't post for a period of 24 hours or so after creating an account. Just some thoughts on the matter. Who do we send an email to at GFP?

There's so much spam here now please don't waste your time cleaning it up until the situation is resolved. 10-15 seconds for deleting one post...that's a lot of time.

Al,
If the group moved to another site due to the spam would all of the previous threads be lost? Can all of it be backed up and moved? I wish I was more techliterate at times like these.

There's so much good information here in the archives. I would hate to lose it all. If GFP is willing to put some posting restrictions in place, I would be willing to help clean-up the site. Perhaps some of us could have moderator priviledges for a few hours in order to do some much needed spring cleaning.

I would vote to continue to stay here even with people posting spam for super diet pills, porn links, and other junk. I am able to tell at a glance that those posts have nothing to do with gluten free eating and I don't click on them.

I hope they do put some reasonable restrictions on accounts and posting here like you must register and log in to post, and an email reply to confirm your account. The site should be able to ban IP addresses if the account is being abused. There should also be some sort of review process to allow a member to reapply after being banned if the unwanted actions stop and stay gone.

Al, it stinks that you are spending so much time removing these links and junk.

Donna, I am sorry Beth is giving you so many problems. I hope that is taken care of and you don't have to stress over it. Take care of your health.

Thank you Al, I have been up all night crying yet again, never had any idea this is what would bring me back. Funny how things work out.

Hi Donna,

I am sorry this has happened to you. It's hard to say how many posts she may have done. There was 1 guest post in the Miracle thread that came from your machine. Of course and I can not say if any posts or PM's she might have done while logged in as you. Please...don't give yourself a heart attack over it. A wise man once told me to ask this question..."Will it matter in 100 years"? Nope...it really won't.

This will all work out for the best!! You guys know, that I don't believe in co-inky-dinks Smile. That happened for a reason. This Katrina sized event on our board will only serve to bring us closer together at an opportune time. I know if need be, every one will pitch in help remove the spam (TEC's right, we'd need to get Admin to give more Moderator rights for awhile to do clean up.)

Take care...we'll get this fix...one way or another.

Thanks MrsP!! If you would like to send it to me that'd be great. I can look into it.

This other place I have been playing with, will do the same thing. As an added bonus...we wouldn't have to learn a new board. YAY!!!
