Duchess, sorry for your loss. Will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
TEC, sorry to hear about your grandfather. It is so hard to watch and wait for a loved one to pass on. Can the Doctors medicate him to help with the discomfort? When my grandmother was dying of kidney failure and complications of diabetes she refused treatment, she said she was ready to go. At first they were giving pain meds every four hours and we were worried that she would get to a point it wouldn't work and she would be in pain, but she would wake up just before it was due and get very aggitated. My Aunt who is an RN told us to give her as much pain medicine as the Dr. would allow. It helped to keep her comfortable, without it she would get very restless and upset. I don't know if he is at that stage yet but don't be afraid to ask questions and sometimes with Doctors you have to understand what they are NOT saying. Once my Aunt had clarified things for us we understood that the Doctor had been trying to tell us the same thing subtly, all along. My thoughts are with you and your family. I was fortunate to have known 3 Grandparents and a Great Grandparent, they are all gone now, it was hard losing them, even though I knew that in the end they were all ready to go. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

Thanks everyone for your comments, thoughts and prayers for my family and me.
The personal care provider finally called hospice in for an evaluation yesterday. The cardiologist requested the eval 2 weeks ago, but the PCP refused to do it. I'm not sure what the outcome of the eval was as I have yet to go to the hospital today. The benefit of hospice is that they will like Kathy said do whatever is necessary to make my grandfather comfortable. There is no reason for anymore tests considering his prognosis.

It's all he can do to get a breath while wearing a full oxygen mask with the oxygen at the highest level. It so sad to watch a formerly strong, healthy and proud man die such a horrible death. I totally understand why some people choose to die on their own terms. .

TEC,
I understand exactly what you are saying. I am so sorry you are facing this too, my sympathies go out to you.
My father law was days from his 72nd bday. Still with the spirit of a fifty something year old. He too had heart problems and had fluid building up on his heart and around his lungs. He wore an oxygen mask to help him breathe. Lukemia finally robbed him of his platlets and he was bleeding from every bruise and scratch, uncontrollably. It was really hard to watch. Finally he was going to come home, with chemo and prayers he might have been with us a few more months. The evening before being discharged he had a head ache which turned out to be an anurism. He passed away in his sleep with all of his children, thier spouses, and his wife of 30 years at his side. I am thankful for him and all the strength he gave our family-truely the calm spot amongst the storm. He left us in a way that allowed for goodbyes and I love yous, he wouldn't show much pain and he always shared a smile when he couldn't muster a laugh, and That is what I will remember. |
