As far as I know, I am gluten free but I still am having problems with Dermatitis herpetiformis. My dermatologist says it is eczema but I think it might be DH. It itches and there are small bumps. I do use some iodized salt but not much. Can you be gluten free and still have DH? I thought eczema was just like having very dry skin. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

My husband has DH problems even though he's gluten free. Sometimes he's fine and other times a few of the blisters crop up - even if he's not had anything different to eat. The iodine in the salt could be a major factor. Can you use the plain salt? It's what I use to keep the iodine out of his diet.

Judy, Thanks for the helpful suggestion. I will try the non-iodized salt. It is nice to have some helpful replies and suggestions.

Well, I posted on this a couple of weeks ago, thinking I was having a DH outbreak, too. I've been GF for how many decades, and was still having the occasional "DH" outbreak (had one three weeks ago, and was right on the tail-end of that one when another started last week). Finally gave up and went to the doctor, and . . . it's eczema!!!!!!!!!! Argh! They gave me an intra-muscular injection of steroids, and it cleared within 48 hours!!

The doctor also told me which foods to avoid, and though the list was short, I had been eating almost every single one of them for weeks! Peanuts (love Laura Scudders PB), shellfish (had a few lobsters at home), milk, eggs (my fav breakfast), citrus (for the past couple of weeks, I'd been making fresh-squeezed juice each morning from a crate of fruit I bought), chocolate (I adore that 85%-cocoa kind), strawberries (which require dipping in the afore-mentioned chocolate), wheat (well, there's one I don't do obviously!), and soy. Not all of these aggravate every person, but you dump them all and then try them one at a time. ALso, the eczema flares up in times of stress, which has been high for the past month for me.

So, maybe yours really is eczema? Either a pred-pack or a shot of depo-medrol will likely fix it right up if it's eczema -- you should as the doctor about it. Meantime, avoid those foods, too. After a couple of lobsters (oink!) one evening, my skin burned so badly all night I could barely sleep. Benadryl didn't even help. Hindsight is 20/20, isn't it? As the doctor was reading the list to me, I was chuckling, having eaten almost all of those foods in mass quantities for the past weeks. Ah, relief at last.

ANd no, eczema isn't just very dry skin, although that's a part of the problem, and you have to moisturize well daily. The doctor said the best one to use was Gold Bond Ultimate Healing lotion -- it's $10 at my Walgreen's, but worth it. VERY good cream.

Finally, here are a few websites I found and got answers from as well:
http://www.medinfo.co.uk/conditions/eczema.html
http://www.eczema.net/
http://www.wholehealthmd.com/hc/resourceareas_learn/1,1441,459,00.html

Good luck! ANd feel free to ask if your have any more questions I might be able to help with, or PM me.

I have had DH for almost 30 years. If I have iodized salt for 2 days I have a bad breakout. I have carried my own salt in a mini shaker when I know I have to be out. When visiting family-friends I ask if they would mind using non iodized salt and those that I visit often now just keep it on hand for me. Hope you are better soon as I know the itching is terrible.
