Celiac disease is not an allergy. It is an intollerance. People with celiac are not allergic to gluten, they are intollerant of it. Just like people with lactose intollerance are not allergic to milk, they are intollerant of the lactose. I think the words allergy and intollerance are being used interchangably, and it is muddying the waters. _________________ -Colleen

Exactly, though I usually tell people I'm allergic just so they take me seriously. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

The question about corn was in regards to a remark that Prof was sensitive not allergic. The question was could a sensitivity become an allergy.
I understand what you are saying is there is a difference between allergy and intollerance, with gluten our bodies can not digest the gluten and hence causes an internalized reaction in our bodies. With milk intollerance you do not have the necessary enzymes to digest milk and it causes a negative response in your system. Most of us think of an allergic reaction in terms of an external response to something we are exposed to, we can see the reaction. We sneeze, we itch, we get hives.
My opinion is that the bottom line is all (sensitivity, disease and allergy) are an autoimmune response of our bodies to a substance it does not tolerate. The severity varies by person, how it is manifested varies by person. I think the waters are already pretty muddy. How many people on this forum have been told they don't have CD because the tests aren't accurate enough yet to catch it but get better on a GF diet anyway. Who was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, Celiac Sprue, Non-tropical Sprue, Gluten Intollerance. What about DH. Gluten Sensitivity. If the only cure for all of these is to avoid gluten, does it matter whether or not we call it a sensitivity, disease or allergy? The problem in my personal experience people lableled with a sensitivity or allergy tend to believe it is not as serious and so are not as careful with what they put into their bodies. What kind of damage does this cause long term? _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

You all have made me feel incredibly fortunate. I have a primary care physician who knew what he was seeing two years ago when my Vitamin D and calcium levels were too low two years ago. He sent me to an endocrinologist who did some blood work and other tests and said he was pretty sure what those tests would reveal. He was right on the money -- I have CD! I have Whole Foods and Wild Oats within a convenient drive and a supermarket around the corner which has discovered the market for gluten-free foods so I have easy access to gluten-free foods. The Denver CO Celiac Support Group publishes a booklet with advice on available name-brands which are GF. My endocrinologist has a dietician on staff who is my new best friend and has been a wonderful source of information. I also have restaurants whose chefs are knowledgeable and where I can dine safely.
I have a quilting friend whose daughter is experiencing all the symptoms of CD but all of the MDs she's seen do not agree that that is her trouble. My friend and I are going to a CD information night at our local hospital tonight to see what other information is available.
After about a year and a half on a GF diet I feel enormously better and foods which used to bother me no longer do. I still have problems with dairy products so I stick to soy milk and only have cheese occasionally. Other dairy products, including ice cream, really upset me.
I really like this forum. You all are so interesting and so well-informed. This is my first posting, but maybe not the last! |
