What do you guys do when you "have" to go out to eat? Some examples I can think of would be for a friend/relative's birthday, corporate parties, etc. What do you do when the restaurant has nothing you can eat? Do you bring your own food? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I think Al said he brings his own dressing and orders a plain salad.
I have been known to eat many a plain baked potato or plain hamburger, I will also eat before or after if possible, and when traveling I carry nuts and things like gf granola bars. (I don't take them into the Restaurant because some places get really nasty about that.)
For family events mine are pretty good and we try to go to the local restaurants that I have contacted or eaten at previously and now what I can eat without getting sick. I avoid chicken when eating out because most places inject it to make it pump and moist and gluten is usually part of that. Alot of steaks are seasoned with things that contain gluten also. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

Ditto... although I like cheese on my burger. And I will take a GF bar into a restaurant and eat it discreetly. I've never had a problem. If all else fails I'll just sit there and drink my water and chat with everyone else and be glad I'm healthy enough to enjoy their company. _________________ Cheers!

If I there is an event that I feel I need to participate in then I try to make arrangements for a GF meal long before I arrive at the restaurant. If I don't feel that I can get a safe meal at said place then I either don't go or go and sit and chat. Edited to add that I never feel that I 'must' do anything. I don't feel any guilt for not attending restaurant centered activities.
Once you have 2 ambulance rides to the ER, 2 stays in ICU and almost die (literally) twice in an eight day period there are no 'must dine out' events.

In the spirit of full disclosure...it wasn't simply a CD problem. My lack of a strict diet at that time did not help the situation. If I get glutened and react with vomitting or diarhhea I must go straight to the ER in order to be treated for the other autoimmune disease I have.

I know is not much of an advise but it is better to be safe then sorry

You sound like me! I have a life-threatening reaction to gluten. At a place where I worked a few years back, it was the first day of the school year, and all school personnel (I was a high school teacher then) were taken to lunch by the school board. I was told it was mandatory. I told them my situation, and that I'd meet up with everyone in the afternoon again, after they returned from their lunch. I had stuff I could do in my classroom anyway . . . Still, "No, you must go -- this is a school event, and you are required to attend." Fine, but you can't make me eat! I took a can of crushed pineapple in its own juice (my fave lunch-on-the-run), and sat watching them eat their disgusting buffet, eating my organic pineapple. They got really nasty about it. So, that afternoon, I got off the little bus that we had ridden to the buffet, got into my car, went back to my hotel, packed up my things, and called jsut long enough to say good-bye to the superintendent! I did NOT want to work for such stupid people. Can you imagine how everything eles in my life there would have been?

Agreed! I don't think I'll get THAT sick, but I'm trying to stick to a GF diet as much as I can so my system can heal quicker. I like the idea of eating beforehand and just chatting with people at the restaurant. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
