Hi, confused here. Sad

I've posted on this site after being on the IBS wagon, then thought I had celiac, which I still may have since I have not been tested, but knowing how easily these conditions get misdiagnosed, (about 50% of the time,I wanted to pose this question anyway...

Has anyone been misdiagnosed with Colitis or Chrohn's Disease after you thought you had either Celiac Disease or IBS ?

Do the symptoms of Colitis mimic Celiac and IBS?
.....( ie: major abdominal pain... bloating, constipation (what I had),gas, back pain, and weight loss.(except more ibs'ers did not lose weight.) Besides me losing the weight, I don't think it was because I did not want to eat,but it naturally ate away at my muscles. I did not starve myself at all, but went from 245 lbs. to 180.

Talking with people here at Celiacforums.com, more and more people seem to convince me I had celiac,(the weight loss) which along with IBS mimics the same symptoms.
So what I have seems to be that whenever I eat wheat or gluten, oats, rye, barley,I get terrible cramping.

I have had a Colonoscopy, which showed Diverticulosis, an Upper/Lower GI, which showed Gerd, and three Blood panels that showed no sign of parasites.

I have yet to find out exactly what is going on with me. Even if I stay off the wheat (anything with enriched flour) I still get crampy and still not myself. I am trying to get an abdominal or pelvic CT scan,or endoscopy.

When I get this intense stomach pain/cramping, I can feel a lump in my pelvic area that seems to be tender, when I rub it a little, I can hear the loud gurgling in the intestines, and not sure if it's gas(air) or fluids traveling through them.

Maybe I'm concerned more with the wheat and not paying attention to the gerd/divertic symptoms that could really be all this pain. I don't eat any raw veggies,I cook them and blend them in soups,no nuts, no coffee,no beer,no acidic, spicy foods, and I still feel uncomfortable.

Thank You! Smile

Hi Jim,

Did they do any celiac blood work or take biopsies?

It's very possible you don't have CD...but it's something they need to look for. Doing the bloodwork/biospies is the only way

Thank you Al for the reply.
I remember you telling me you do have the Gerd, Diverticulosis and Celiac deisease.
oddly enough, two people called me up this week to tell me maybe I have Colitis instead of Celiac, but I know for certain that I still can't eat the wheat or gluten.

I also did check out those GF beer websites you sent to someone else, and they do sell the Ramapo Valley Passover Honey beer in So. Cal., for $12.00 a six pack! I wonder how it tastes before I plop down that kind of mula on something without gluten or wheat.

Your right, I'm wasting time not getting tested. Jim

Hi Jim,

I think I may have misinturpeted your 1st post. I took it to say you recently had the scopes and the tests. I'm guessing they were not recent.

Some Colitis info: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/colitis/index.htm
http://www.emedicine.com/aaem/topic120.htm

Do you know if they tested you for Colitis during those procedures? They will take samples of the colon. They did that when they did a flex-sig to officially dx my diverticulosis. The Doc wanted to make sure there was nothing else going on.

It's certainly possible to have multiple issues going on. If you still are not feeling well, I would seriously think about getting back to the doctor. We are not Doctors, nor do we play them on TV or the internet. Smile So we can't say for sure what you have. But what we can tell you...is don't dismiss gluten until you've given the GF diet a fair chance to work. A fair chance would be...maybe....6 months.

Good luck!! Certainly keep us up to date.

Oh...as for the Ramapo Beer. I have tried it...it's my least favorite of the GF beers I've tried.

Bards is #1 - but I don't know if that is being produced anymore.
New Grist is #2 - it's a cross between a hard cider and beer.
Ramapo is #3 - it has a sour taste.

But hey...a #3 beer is better than NO BEER!! The New Grist (made in Milwaukee) is about 7.00 per 6 pack (about the price of a micro-brew). Bards was about 9.00-10.00 when it was avail.

See if they will sell you 1 bottle. The liqour store did that for me when I was trying out the New Grist. I had to take it back to my car, because I couldn't drink it in the store. Talk about feeling like you're back in High School again!! Well, I guess since I never did it in HS, I at least got to do it as an adult LOL

Al,

I did have a Colonoscopy last October and the GI did take a Biopsy from the colon, found no Polyps, and told me I had Mild Diverticulosis.

She did not do a test for Celiac. The bloodwork was looked at by a few docs, and my mom's internist, and I don't know how well trained he is, as are other doctors today regaurding these more prevelant conditons, but told me it looked like IBS,and to "learn to get a Life". Some bedside manner!! Rolling Eyes

The everyday pain I'm having is that my right side Pelvic area is tender to touch and sore. Thanks again!
