In July I am going to the annual Great Lakes Retreat at Olivet College in Michigan. We stay in the dormitories and gripe about the beds and the showers. Honestly, I don't know how those kids spend an entire semester there. This will be my first experience staying away from home since going GF and it has me a bit worried. Their food program is catered by Marriott, (I believe) and is cafeteria style. I've requested to speak with the "head caterer" but I haven't heard back from them yet.
I'll bring my own snacks, of course but I don't have access to a Fridge and perishable things won't hold out for a whole week . Well, I guess I'll plan what I can, hope for the best, and appeal to my Guardian Angel for protection. My Angel always works overtime when I travel anyway ! _________________ The Love we withhold is the pain that we carry.

I only say that (we're very 'different critters') because I never think that way, never make a back-up plan, and haven't ever stopped to wonder what others would do if my marrow took a big dive or something . . . Now you're going to make me start rethinking everything, Al. I normally buy nonrefundable airline tickets, never buy travel-cancellation insurance, never make any back up plans . . . |
I can never remember the traits of the Type ____ person. Maybe my way of thinking is an occupatonal hazard. We drill backup backup backup (your data) into the customer's head all the time. I will always try to have a backup plan. Always try to playout the different possibilities in my head so all the bases are covered. It's not that I worry excessively about stuff, I just like to know my options. I have been accused of thinking too much or over-thinking something Hey I'm thinking - maybe this should be in the Oddities thread. See...there I go thinking again! D'OH!!! _________________ Al

So that's where it comes from . . . I'm gettin' ya! That's a type A, Al.

I just wanted to share some good news. I talked with our friends in Tennessee this morning. They want all the information I can send them about CD - what I can eat, what I can't. They said we'll fix as much unprocessed whole food as possible - no labels to read on a carrot or potato
As far as baked goods go, I probably will take my Pamela's or GF Pantry stuff and some foil pans that can be tossed.
I can't wait to see them - the last time we were together, I was tired and skinny (and living in the bathroom). _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |

That's great news! And remember to talk to them about pans that have been sued before for gluten-y stuff, and cross-contamination . . . What great friends!!!
It will make your whole visit so much more enjoyable . . . |

I'm not sure what to do about pans - I haven't thrown out my cookware either; just scrubbed everything down real good. So far, so good. We will see how the blood work comes back in 8 weeks. _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |

I don't take any . . . I just buy one or two when I get there, and the others use what's there in the house. And when I leave, I leave whatever I bought there . . . DOn't worry -- you won't be too squished in the carry on! |

| Going north to our summer camp near Presque Isle. The beaches are really great there! Its tough sometimes though because the water really does not warm up, mid 70's, untill July. It won't bother the kids though! If the water is 60 they'll go in! |

Oh, a cabin sounds fun! And how many days or hours in a car will it be? |
This will be his 30th class reunion... he was class of 1976. I'm not sure how many hours it will take... middle of Iowa all the way across South Dakota -- I'm too scared to add them up!
Hey Al, the jewelry place sounds cool. We will definitely have to check that out... especially with 3 daughters!
Has anybody heard of any good places to stay out there... Hill City/Rapid City area? _________________ Kim --

I think I will be also buying a few new pans and taking them with me to TN. My DH (who has already spent a couple of weeks with our friends helping them with the house) tells me they have these really great cast iron pans that you never wash, just wipe down. I will have to risk their thinking I'm crazy, but I can just imagine how much gluten has accumulated on those.
It won't be a problem - we've been good friends for nearly nine years; they already know I'm crazy. _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |

Al,
I had a boyfriend several years ago who termed this type of thinking as
"thinkf@#$ing myself.' Needless to say he is no longer around, but the term has stuck. It occurs to me that that term might apply to you as well. Hope no one takes offense to the insinuated profanity.
Seriously, I think to some extent we have to over think things. If we didn't we would be sick all of the time.

We stayed at a really nice Country Inn and Suites in Rapid City. We had a suite with 2 seperate sleeping areas and also a refrigerator and microwave. That was pre GF days so I remember they provided a really nice breakfast as well. It was very close to many eating places including an Outback Steakhouse.
I am also pretty sure that the jewelry place we toured was in Rapid City also....I just can't remember the name-Mt Rushmore Gold sticks in my head for some reason. Of course we were in MANY jewelry stores as I was on a mission for a specific piece....which I found with the patience of DH. (he is used to this as I am usually on a mission for something when we are vacation!)
Al also wanted me to mention how cool the Needles Highway and Custer State Park. Hmmmm, all this talk of vacations is making me want to go one! Hope you have a great time!
