Yesterday I had to have my shoulder taped witha stretch adhesive bandage. 4 hours later I had symptoms of being glutened. Does anyone know of any chance of such a thing having gluten in it? I don't know the brand but it is like an Ace bandage with very sticky adhesive, tan color, and a thread stripe down the middle. I became convinced it was a problem and tore it off at 4 am after a co uple of hours tossing and turning with a very upset stomach. Nothing I ate yesterday or the day before is remotely suspect...
Only other new thing was the gel they use for ultrasounds.

Hi,
Some adhesives are not GF. After all why do you think it's called GLUten Remember wheat paste as a kid in school? And some kids eating it!
I have seen conflicting reports about gluten being absrobed thru the skin. Some say it's too big to go thru...others say your with the right tests you can tell what type of deorderant you put on! (That person work for a dermalogical research place).
Of course you could get rashes from just the contact of it. |

Yeah, the GLU-ten part seems to explain it all.
I looked at my arm last night nearly 24 hours after removing the bandage and I had a red rash where the bandage had been. I have seen that happen to me before when I have worn band aids, not all of them, and doctors called it "contact dermatitis" - seems a pretty generic term.
Anyway, my stomach is still feeling pretty crummy but I hope the migraine doesn't come back (my pill wears off in 3 hours...)
Live and learn, again.

skbird, thanks for this thread. It's very interesting, as I've always had a major problem with most adhesives and wondered what it was that caused the actual red/blistery/itchy rash under where the sticky part is.
I never knew that there is gluten in any adhesives. I'm still pretty new to CD etc. It seems that there are a lot of us who have had various problems all our lives, and we come to great forums like this one and finally learn what the medical profession hasn't ever been able to help us with. _________________ Diagnosed by blood test & biopsies Nov 2004

I'm really hoping that I'm not affected by topical skin contact. I accidently ate some gluten the other day and found out that I react right away and then terrible heartburn and cramps all day. Next morning I woke up vomiting too... was a good reminder of my former life....
I made sure that my toothpaste is gluten free and I bought soap that I knew to be GF but the shampoo i'm using isn't guaranteed to be by the company but I believe it to be.
My problem would be with laundry.
My mother was soooo excited when I left for school and would have to deal with my own laundry... THAT NEVER HAPPENED!! Took me a few days to discover the wonderful world of wash and fold laundry services. Here in NYC they even pickup and deliver free of charge!
If I start reacting to laundry detergent I'm really going to need to move somewhere where less clothing is needed.
I can deal with having to learn how to cook... laundry crosses the line tho!
By the way... GF for 16 days and feeling better then I've felt in 16 years!!!!!!! I honestly never thought I'd ever feel good ever again. |

ALRIGHT Ari!!!!
Sorry to hear you got glutened. I can usually tell by the time I walk out the door. Burping, heartburn, ab. discomfort.
Everybody's different - certainly with the skin contact. Thankfully it does not bother me.
Keep up the good work!!
Hehehe I don't have to deal with laundry either. My wife won't let me touch it LOL!!! I guess that red shirt in the batch of whites did the trick _________________ Al

A wife sounds like an interesting concept... maybe I can feel better long enough to start pursuing 1.
Can't beat free laundry! |

Anyone have any idea where I can find a list of bandaids without gluten in them? I googled it, but all I got was articles that had both Gluten Free and bandage in them. Nothing about GF bandages.
I had a biopsy to confirm my DH diagnosis. They stitched the biopsy site and now I have a red, bumpy, itchy rash where the bandaid was. Even the guaze part. I've been trying to use tape and gauze pads, but it just doesn't hold.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi Manda,
I suspect you should be able to find what you're looking for in here:
This will show Delphi's Health & Beauty GF lists. Just remember to click the "No Thanks" or "Continue" buttons to go past the ad.
http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/display.asp?webtag=celiac&msg=39520.1
I hope the biopsy site heals quickly and the rash goes away soon! _________________ Al

Thanks, Al! I have that list printed out, but I missed the Active Strip Bandages by 3M.
I hope the rash goes away soon! I think at this point, everything is irritating it...I also hope that when I get my results back from the biopsy tomorrow they can tell me once and for all if I have DH or not.

| Al: Can you please help me out with this topic. I was looking on the Delphi Forum site and I read that CD can't be absorbed thru the skin. Is that site for purposes of the CD found on your body. Reason I am asking is because even though the dr said "inconclusive with me, I know I have it and my daughter and i were looking at pictures of the dermitisis type and she has it plain as day. I am taking her to the doctor for the test. So I just wanted to be sure. Appreciate a response. Thanks...............Nikki (Not sick for 2 weeks and 1 day!!!!!!!!!) |

Hi Nikki,
WAY TO GO!! Over 2 wks and not being sick?!?! COOL!!! Keep up the great work.
I'm a little confussed on your question. Are you asking if gluten can be absorbed thru the skin? I have seen both answers - Yes & No. I have not researched it lately to find any further definitive answer.
For DH - gluten CONTACT & INGESTION must be avoided (as far as I know).
For CD - some can touch gluten and not have any problems. Just as long as it is not ingested in any way. _________________ Al

I have pretty much stayed dazed and confused with CD but I'm learning thanks to all the good folks here. Thanks for the reply and encouragement, Al .
Stephanie: I never had a problem with bandages until I had anaphylaxic (?) 2 years ago from buckwheat. Now I am allergic to all kinds of things, have asthma and take 2 allergy shots every 2 weeks. Funny thing though. Since I haven't had gluten for the last 2 weeks, I haven't had a problem with my asthma and I live down in southeast Texas where everybody suffers. Haven't needed a bandage lately but I usually break out from the adhesive. Paper tape seems to work better for me. Hope you get better soon.................Nikki |

Nikki,
This is not surprising...many have found that after going GF their asthma lessens or disappears!
You will notice many things along the way. Somethings will sneak up on you...all of a sudden you say "Hey I don't have this or that anymore".
For fun...watch your saliva production...see if it increases Many report that too (me included). _________________ Al
