Hello all.. I first have to say that I have not been following my diet.
When I was first diagnosed w/this disease, it was back in June of 2005. I lost 30lbs in one month and followed my diet up until November. Everything has gone down hill since then. I have been eating what I am NOT suppose to eat and do not know what my consequences are for my future. Yes, I still go to the bathroom, BUT bc I am continuously eating, I am not losing the weight. I have gained if anything.
Please, someone out there, tell me that this is bad for me. I have no self control and its really hard. I have kids at a home and a boyfriend I cook for and cant help but eat what I make for them. Tell me, what will happen if I continue this? |

Take a deep breath.....we all have been there at one time or another ourselves! Don't beat yourself up and mire in guilt because it will only make you feel worse. However, you have asked what may happen if you continue to eat gluten so I will tell you.
From what I've read and experienced myself, you will continue to damage your intestinal villi so you most likely will not be absorbing your vital nutrients. That, in turn, could lead to serious illness. Lymphoma, intestinal cancers are just two that stand out big with this. Not to say they are guaranteed to happen but how lucky are you? You may reach the point where you become so sick, you will be close to an invalid, unable to live life to it's fullest. As you age, these will only have a more severe impact on you in general.
Is there a support group in your area that could lend a helping hand to you? Talk to your kids and boyfriend and ask for their help in keeping you on track. And, of course, this forum is more than happy to do the same! |

Hey Mousy,
I'm glad you're back!! I've wondered about ya. It sounds like you're having a rough time of it. Sorry to hear that.
What will happen?
Worst case - you'll die.
Best case - you'll feel so bad that you wish you'd die.
I don't think you want either for yourself or your kids.
One thing new is the GF Diet Boot Camp - that might give you some ideas as to what to make to keep the NGF people happy if they won't go GF with you. http://www.celiacforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1309 Strip things back to the basics for everyone.
This is not something to mess around with. Like Lisa said - try to find a local support group. It can help greatly!! That's not to say we won't help you - but there's nothing like face to face contact. _________________ Al

No, I'm really not kidding about the long term eating gluten. Would they guy that tells you your favorite adult beverage (Capt. Morgan Rum if I recall) is GF, lie to ya? I dont think so
It does nasty things to you. It can be a slow drawn out process too. I hope you try your hardest to stay on your diet!! We'll help however we can!! _________________ Al

No, he's not joking. In fact, the best of the best would be becoming malnourished: your body isn't getting the nutrients it needs (due to the damanged intestines) so you'll "starve" even though you're eating.
I really understand how hard this is, but you've gotta keep at it, for your sake and your loved ones. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

The part about dying is true, but everyone dies. If I may add to Al's comment, I believe it is really about the quality of life, especially in your final years. Al suggested this in his "best case" scenario. Besides the obvious side effects of persistent damage to your villi, there is also a laundry list of problems associated with being malnuriched.
Currently there are a few things that keeps me motivated to stay in the gluten-free lifestyle: Being able to play tennis and other sports (without the loss of energy, cramps...etc) and looking forward to having ice-cream treats (I become lactose intolerant after damaging my villi).
I'm pretty sure the support group can help you. My suggestion is to find something that will motivate you. I'm a bachellor without kids so the things that motivate me might seem a bit shallow and silly....but whatever works, go with it.
Oh, if you pray...I find that prayers help. |

| Hello Yellow.. u just said something that caught my eye, that has been happening ALOT.. one of many things.. *CRAMPING.. I cant begin to tell u how much this happens to me, along w/my teeth hurting, inside mouth sores .. My boyfriend tends to like to 'hand play' alot, and dont know if being a Celiac has anything to do w/it, but when he does, IM ALWAYS IN PAIN and sorta bruise easily. To him, he is tapping me, but to me, OMG.. it hurts ALOT and burns for a bit. is this also part of it. .I mean, yes, I get all of this, but not all at once. Every now and then, one or another occurs. But the cramping on my calves especially, has been the WORST. I've collapsed a few times and I havent told my boyfriend. Afraid to.. |

You mentioned you have children. You do realize that your kids have a 1 in 20 chance of developing CD also. If one of them had it would you feed them food they weren't supposed to eat? Food that was poison to their bodies? If one of them were to develop the disease how could you expect them to follow the diet if you don't? Hopefully you will be lucky and your children won't get this but what if??
Edited for niceness, you wanted somethings to get you kick started back on your CD lifestyle, I hate to be mean. On a nicer note, you can do this, we can help. We have all been there. Everyone has to find their own thing, whatever it is, that keeps us gluten free, for me its a combination of the fear of cancer and not wanting to ever have another accident again because I couldn't get to the restroom in time after being glutened. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88

Mousy,
If you don't mind me asking, where in NNJ are you?
I am just curious because that's where I am, so if I can suggest some places, etc. to you, I'd be more than happy to help you out if I can.
Let me know.
Keep smiling! _________________ ~Torrey
