I was just told by my GI dr. that I have a highatle hernia, crohn's they found cancer poliups when they did my colan osc. . A friend of mine said to go buy papya pills take like 4 to 6 pills 4 times a day & ur hernia will go away. but my stomach keeps blowing up that I look like I'm 9 months pregnant with twins, they can't find anything else now. I been truley G/F for 3 months now no slip ups. It was hard to do but I did it. I'm stumped at what could be wrong that this happens. I even have my family going G/F so it makes it easier on me. . If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. |

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I too have a hiatal hernia. I don't think taking papya pills (or any pills) will make it go away. A hiatal hernia is the top part of your stomach protruding thru a tear in the membrane into the chest cavity area. I suspect only surgery could repair that damage, just like any other hernia located elsewhere in the body.
What did the doctor say about your HH? Did he go thru all the dietary restrictions for HH? (no spicy or high acid foods, no coffee, no caffine, no onions too I think, maybe even no chocolate!). Also many times HH bothers people at night when laying down. No eating 2 hrs or so before bed time. Also elevating the head of your bed to help the reflux.
Now, the papya pill my settle your heartburn you experience that goes along with a HH. Fish oil (Essential Fat Acids - Omega 3, 6 & 9) capsules might also help. Fish oil is an anti-inflammatory. It helped me a lot as I was starting out on my GF diet. I still take them today. There are many other health benefits to Omega oils.
What did the doc say about the polyps?
Glad to hear your family is supporting you in this. Support like that is invaluable!! It's possible your body is taking longer to heal. I have seen where it can take some people up to 2 years!
Good luck! I hope things start to settle down for you. _________________ Al

| well my Dr. told me that there was no surgery that he can do for the hernia. I haven't talk to him about the papya pills. I do sleep with 3 pillows like they are layered so I haven't been getting that reflux & my back feels better. I did hear about fish oil pills from the health food store that I shop at for my foods. I will try them It can't hurt. I use to take them when I was a young girl my grandparents raised me so u know the old fashion way of doing things. thanks for the advise aklap. |

I thought others might like to see what we're talking about
This does a good job at showing and explaining it:

aklap thank u so much for that info when I read it, it was me all over again the second one that says the stomach is being strangled. I'm going to get a new GI Dr. because mine is an *** . My mother in law was a RN. for 40 yrs & she gives me alot of insight on Dr.'s in my area. which is PA. when it said that the stomach is being strangled I knew that was me because I'm always hungry & I'm only suppose to eat 6 times a day to gain weight but the only place that I'm gaining weight is from my breast to my private area & it makes me look like at times 6 to 9 months pregnant with twins. Sometimes it is hard for me to walk, even if I stand for a while my legs just give out & I fall on my ***. I'm suppose to have a Esophageal Manometry done. well I guess I have to wait to see the out come of that. |

Dear Maria,
I know this answer might come really late from your original post but I just felt I had something to say about hiatal hernias. I was a sufferer of a hiatal hernia for about 20 years. In the last stages I was sleeping literally sitting up. Talk about cramped neck and back! I was never a fan of bread -much less now that I diagnosed myself as CD- or spicy or greasy foods but they found 3 ulcers in my stomach!!! In the very end, even water gave me acid reflux. Hiatal hernias run in my family but some relatives may have different symptoms or react positively to certain drugs or diets. In the end nothing worked for me. Stress did emphasize symptoms and while I lived in the States I decided to have laparascopic surgery. My sister had just had it done in Mexico and we thought that the States would have better technology and care... When I went to the doctor, she told me "they didn´t treat it with surgery anymore" that they "treated it with drugs and diet" and I just couldn´t believe her ears!!! This was back in 1997! So, I waited another good 4 long, dreadful, painful, excruciating years until I came back to Mexico and had the surgery that changed my life. Before surgery, somehow just like now, my life circled around my mealtimes. I couldn´t take a shower, do chores, get agitated or moving until after a good 2 hours after eating. I couldn´t eat a late dinner, etc., etc. Needles to say, I skipped lots of meals to get stuff done but then I would be so bloated, moody, hungry and with a terrible gastritis I thought about killing myself everyday (now I know it might´ve also been a symptom of my CD). I lost a lot of weight. Everything gave me a heartburn. After I had surgery, I would literally eat my meals laying down on the bed. No more bad breath or white tongue, no more cavities, no more hair falling out, no more acid reflux and no more sleeping sitting up. And although that is the same surgery that set off my CD, I would do it over and over again. So, yes, look for other doctors. You might be able to find one through gastro laparoscopic surgery on the internet. The surgery is expensive -I had mine done at the community hospital- but it might be a good topic to discuss with your health insurance, if you do have one. Good luck!

| My daughter was dx as celiac pos when she was four. then came our dx for GERD when she was 6. Medications to control her GERD had a chaotic effect (side effect) on her general health. SHe was then tested for lactose intolerance..Positive too. Her doctor said the GERD was 'probably' from the hiatal herni they found while doing a second biopsy. There is a surgery but because of scaring that causes nerve sending pathways to fallapart he did not think it adviseable. I did a little research and saw some similar stories. It is good to hear there are positive stories, real success'. I would love to fix one of her problems permanately! The prescriptions left her a wreck so now she takes zantac as needed (4-5 times a week.) We are still careful to eat wisely. She loves spearmint but it hates her. so we chew fruity gum =) |
