| My son is going to be on a crew this summer working in national parks and camping out with a crew. I think accessibility to fresh food will be somewhat limited. Does anyone have any ideas for some GF freeze dried or other good camping foods that can be used with limited cooking utensils, campfires, etc.? |

They don't make complete meals, but you could always send him with some GF jerky and trail mix. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Hi jfvp,
Wow - sounds like work!! A million years ago, I had a girlfriend that did something similar (worked in state parks on crew. building stairs, paths, painting, feeding the wild bears, etc). I bet it'll be a good experience for him.
Take a look thru these posts. I think you might find some ideas. What about packets of Starkist tuna? These are GF per Del Monte:
http://www.starkist.com/template.asp?section=products/index.html
StarKist Tuna (excluding crackers in Starkist Lunch To-Go)
StarKist Tuna Creations (excluding Herb & Garlic variety)
StarKist Tuna Fillets (5 oz pouch) (excluding Teriyaki variety)

Here is one company from the above link: http://www.alpinesurvival.com/GlutenFree.htm. They have GF meals.
Check out Hormel's GF list. The shelf stable foods: http://www.hormel.com/faq/faqList.asp?catitemid=41

Most of our products (all except for the Indian Meats, Stir Fry Sauce & Noodles, and Vegetable Kofta Pilaf) are gluten-free. Kontos provides our bread. They should be contacted directly for all nutritional queries on bread, including gluten-free status. We have tested all Tasty Bite products, checked the antecedents of all our ingredients such as vinegar and spices - and can say with assurance that these products are indeed gluten-free.
Is this product suitable for camping?
We get a lot of mail from campers who tell us the Tasty Bite and Thai Table range of entrees are perfect for camping. The advantages are that the packs are not too heavy or bulky and so easy to carry. Secondly, the food can be eaten without heating, as it is ready to eat. Of course, it tastes the best, when the pouch is placed in a pan of boiling water for about 2 minutes. Some campers tell us it is easy to dispose of the pouches by simply rolling up the empty pouch like a tight tube and pushing it into the outer pack. This is easy to pack and carry till you find garbage bins where you are camping. Finally, we also get letters telling us that the food provides a tasty and welcome respite from some typical camping foods!

Some of the Thai Kitchen noodle bowls and noodle cart entrees are gluten free. I bring them to work all the time as they are really easy (and cheap). Just add hot water. Not really a complete meal but a good start.

I use the Thai Kitchen and then add a small can of chicken or vegetables or both when I want to make a more complete meal. I also used to use boil-in-bag rice on camping trips with chicken broth, canned meat and vegetables. A lot depends on how much room he is going to have to take things and how remote their campsites are going to be. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

I agree. These would be good, there's no added sugar and they have a wee bit higher fat content than some other bars, which would be good for someone who's been working out all day and needs the few extra cals. The Banana flavor my favorite one so far. They're mostly fruit and nuts, like condensed trail mix... _________________ Cheers!

As far as a snack, ener-g has really good pretzels. Sorry I don't know of any freeze dried items. _________________ Sarah |
