|
|
Hi:
I have been dealing with gluten intolerance for several years (asymptomatic of all digestive disorders) until January 2004 when my body systems collapsed. My only symptom was anemia for a number of years. Then last year I started to rapidly waste away and lose pounds. I am 5'9" but was never overweight ... so this was rather shocking indeed.
I am trying to search out gluten free (hopefully whole food type) supplements ... as when my body collapsed I also developed multiple chemical sensitivites, etc. ... since I have started a gluten free diet in November, 2004, my symptoms are slowly dissipating.
Any help would be a blessing indeed.
Thank you,

Many people order vitamins and sups from www.iherb.com
You do have to make sure it's GF...but they are very good about listing the ingreds.
Or are you looking for what type of vitamins & supps to take? _________________ Al

I have a question about "modified cellulose gum". Does anyone know if this is GF or not? It is in three supplements I take and I have emailed and called (got voice mail) the company to ask but have not gotten any answer. They are in supplements I can't find other similar combos of and would hate to have to give them up. I don't notice any specific symptoms when I take them but then again a lot of borderline stuff doesn't seem to set me off, either.
Thanks!

Hi Stephanie,
I'm putting 2 & 2 together...but a couple of the supps I looked at that contains modified cellulose gum - it says that it is free of gluten (and other things). here's an example: http://www.vitaminwomen.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?action=display&ID=437 (not that I'm suggesting you need this...LOL!!)
Does this mean ALL modified cellulose gum is GF?? I don't know...but I thought I'd at least throw that out. _________________ Al

Thanks, Al. I know that I've read "food starch" is usually GF but that "modified food starch" is not usually so it follows that while I've seen "cellulose gum" is GF according to sources, I'd wondered if "modified cellulose gum" wasn't. From what I understand, cellulose can come from nearly any vegetable source but is indigestable fiber - makes me think of wheat fiber.
Anyway, only reason I suspected it at all is one supplement I take for my liver, Stone Free by Planetary Formulas, worked really well for me but for a while there a few months back would cause this mild itching and stomach feeling that I couldn't identify. It was similar to what was happening to me when I ate anything with gluten (before going GF). But it doesn't seem to be doing that to me now. Also, from what I've read, anything that cleans your liver can cause itching so maybe it's just something else entirely. Just got paranoid and am annoyed a little that this company is not responding to me.
Thanks!

I just got off the phone with a customer service rep at CVS pharmacy and she assured me that ALL CVS branded vitamins, minerals and supplements are GF.
My nutrionalist at the CDC (celiac disease center) also told me that centrum is GF too.
Between the calcium, magnesium, B complex, vit D, COq10, multivitamin and the flax seed oil that I'm supposed to be taking the CVS branded really helps save money. If you don't live near a CVS, they also deliver. www.cvs.com |

Thank you for the information. I will check them out. I have to be very careful with the non-food sources of Vit B (niacin and other man-made forms) ... I have extreme Niacin flushing reactions. All in God's hands.
I will check out this line of supplements.
Blessings,

You can also get quite a few vitamins from The Gluten Free Pantry (www.glutenfree.com), and the prices are pretty good.
