| I noticed Hershey on the list. When I called them they were very upfront about not putting gluten in their foods (unless marked), but did say that they buy their ingredients from other sources and could not guarantee the ingredients in those. The "hidden" gluten. Mars, on the other hand, sent me a list of every indredient - which was terrific. |

Thanks for the update. It's always good to check, because the companies change suppliers, etc all the time _________________ Al

| Chick-fil-a should be added to the list. They are a fast food compay that has taken time and effort to recognize our needs and have posted their GF items on a 'Gluten Free' section of their web site. Way to go. Now that someone has started this trend maybe it won't be too many years before some others follow. Makes a road trip a little easier. |

Wow - that is cool. I've never heard of them before. I do see they have one in WI (about 2 hrs away from me tho )
Chik-fil-a
Do you know if they have dedicated deep fryers for their GF items (hashbrowns & potato waffle things)?
Thanks!!!! _________________ Al

Thank you for that list! Before reading that post, I only knew about 1/5 of the companies you listed having such a labelling policy! |

You don't realize it until you have to wrestle with trying to determing if it's safe for you.
Thank God for these companies and others like them who CHOOSE label their products that way. They are ahead of their time _________________ Al

I'm glad about all these companies but they don't really go out of their way to advertise GF food. I can't help wonder when they are really going to jump on the band wagon.
It's obvious that Celiac Disease is becoming more and more common and it is a wide open market. You would think that it would dawn on at least one big company that they should start to produce more GF food and what a gold mine they would have and that other companies would follow in their footsteps.
Oh well, I guess I'm just missing the ease of going to the market and picking up what I need and that immediate gratification of a quick meal or snack. Having to search for 3 or 4 days for a certain ingredient in a 30 mile radius is not fun.
Maybe we are better off with smaller companies, their products are probably better quality.
Sorry for the rant. |

| On your list it shows Hellmans. I know many products that say they are GF but still list Nat Flavors, Hellmans is one and some of the products from GF Pantry are others. I have violent anphalactic reactions and am afraid of these. How do you know their Nat Flavors don't contain gluten. How was the list made up? |

Hi Dallidaho,
This is a partial list of companies that will not hide gluten. This means they will not hide gluten in things like Natural Flavors, Modified Food Starch, etc. So if the product contains gluten they will list it. "Modified Food Starch from wheat" or Modified Wheat Starch or Modified Corn Starch.
I did not make the list. I found it posted on another celiac board. But while reseaching this disease, I have found list list to be faily accruate. Compare the labels of their products with other companies. ConAgra in particular. You will see on most of their products, the allergens are listed in bold letters. You must still be careful just because it doesnt list wheat. Wheat free is not gluten free. It could contain rye, barley or oats.
You are right - you don't know unless you call the company. I suspect the people who came up with this list HAS called these companies and asked for their labeling policies. Things change in the ingredients and the processing in places - so it's always a good idea to check for yourself!
Is it possible that you have other food intolerences?? Eggs, dairy, soy?? I see soybean oil is the 2nd ingred on the list!! Soy is one of the Big 8 Allergens. It is not uncommon for celiacs to have other intolerences. I am experimenting right now with dairy. Dairy is a biggie for people with celiac - particulary when the stomach/intestines have not healed.
I hope this has answered some of your questions. _________________ Al

Yup, they're just in malls, Al.
My CHick-Fil-A story: when I got pregnant with my daughter, pre-CD-diagnosis, I was so thin that they told me to eat all I could, and gain about 50 pounds. So I did . . . and then one day, a week or so before delivery, I went to Chick-Fil-A with hubby and got stuck in the table-chair-combo. The tables and chairs were connected at that time, and the table sort of curved around you, so I could easily drop down into the seat, but couldn't get up high enough to get out! THe table wrapped right around my fat tummy . . . There was my husband, behind me, lifting me up until my tummy cleared the table, and then I could get out sideways! Still LMAO when I think of that one!
ANd yes, I gained 50 pounds, and had a healthy baby, and then back to scrawny a month later. Had I known sooner, I might have more kids -- I had 4 miscarriages, after years of infertility each time. Argh! But alls well that ends well, right? ANd I have one at least . . . |
