Travelling to SanFrancisco

Hi!
I am taking my daughter to San Fran for her 16th Birthday...Flying in from Vancouver B.C. We will be staying right downtown... Our hotel has a microwave and a fridge so we are all set for lunches and breakfasts... Does anyone know of a restaurant or two that is familiar with Celiac Disease that we could go to for dinners? We will be in town for three nights. I would also appreciate any suggestions of places a teen would be interested to visit or shop.

You might check here: San Fransisco Bay Area Celiacs. They have a standard list of GF menu's, but I think I'd email them and tell them what hotel you're at, they might be able to give local places.

When are you going? Are you aware that there is a Celiac Conference at Stanford University in 3 weeks?? =)

Wow it would be great to be able to get to a Celiac Conference however we will be in San Fran the first weekend in Sept. and are just staying 3 nights.

It sounds like you are going to the conference... Have you gone to one before? It must be great to be at one...

I find it so surprising that I am unable to get information on a few restaurants familiar with Celiac Disease in downtown San Fran.... A few months back I contacted the Bay Area Celiac group and they were apologetic about not having a list of restaurants... they said that Vancouver (BC) was so much further ahead than San Fran in terms of being Celiac Friendly... I always figured that San Fran would be a very progressive city... One city that I am impressed with is Seattle... If you google "Gluten Free dining Seattle" you get an amazing list of restaurants... We love going to that city..

I guess I will come armed with my "restaurant information card", I will use a local phone book to phone around and I will see who sounds knowledgeable enough.. It is a shame because dining out can sometimes be like playing Russian Roulette, you just never know for sure... and a mistake can ruin a trip as I am sure you know. It is always comforting to know that someone has had a good experience at a particular restaurant.
And Yes I will post any great places we find to eat at!!

Yep, I am going to the conference. Not only is it going to be an informational weekend, it'll be a relax and recoop weekend for me. I've been SO stressed out with my daughter's health issues. This is all very new to me. And, since the birth of our 3rd child.... I've not had much time to breathe - or so it seems. I'm going alone. My husband is going to get a crash course on what it's like to be home, all day, every day, with 3 young children!!! I think it'll be a great weekend for both of us!!!!

And, I will need your help more than ever now... up until this point I've not been as "strict" as I should be. But, I'm having an endoscopy Friday, and my GI said after that.... I will have to be as strict as humanly possible. Ahhhh!

I went to th stanford celiac confrence the first three years after my DD was Dx'd. It was THE best source I had or will ever have had! Bring a pen and a pad. Write down everything --even the stuff that sounds too technical. Research it online when you get home, pull it out a couple of times over the next year, stuff just keeps clicking. The door prizes were fantastic and so were the food vendors. Kinda' bummed I am not going this year. I would like to see what's new.

Our trip out to Nebraska got canceled (Sorry O! Maybe next year?) so now I'm trying to figure out how to go to the Stanford conference and hang with all of you! Must check the couch cracks for coins again... teehee....

I had good luck eating at Chow on Church St. the last time I was in the city. I don't think they're GF per say, but they were very cooperative and accommodating.

Oh, they should be apologizing - I had more SF dr's put me through the wringer trying to figure out what was wrong with me - injecting my veins with die, drinking gross barium cocktails, mucking about in my poop for worms, telling me I was crazy and it was all in my head... Evil or Very Mad

Yes this went on for years. I move to Oregon, meet for the first time w/ Dr. Goode and he looks at me, tilts his head and says, "I think you have Celiac Sprue". Just like that! Stopped eating gluten - life altering experiencing. Those SF docs sure could use some educatin'.

Okay, well I guess I just derailed this thread, but back on track -

What kinds of things is your daughter interested in? Maybe I can point you in the right direction (I lived there for about 10 years and still go back almost every year) If your staying downtown check out Chinatown - the street venders can be cool. Frogs - pets or dinner? Your pick. Laughing

Hit Golden Gate park - there's lots of interesting things to do there; you can rent bikes or roller blades too. Also good museums there if she's into it. Oh, MOMA downtown is very hip! (Modern Art Gallery) And of course you've got to go North Beach to have espresso - oh, wait... does she drink coffee? I always assume with that one... Embarassed

Union square has good shopping; Virgin records, Macy*s, Gumps (mostly for looking - they're $$!!) You can take the Powell St. cable car up to Ghirardelli's in the marina. That's a perfect ride from one touristy area to another. Oh you could also take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) under the Bay to Berkeley and go shopping on Telegraph in the trendy college section of town.... lots of cool stores there. Or stay in the city and hit Height St. - I LOVED shopping there when I was 16! Alright, I'm blathering on... time to go to bed. Have fun! It's a great town... Cool

Hello! I will be traveling to San Fran at the beginning of November for work. There are some great ideas on this topic, but wanted to see if anything new has come up???
