Although not just a disease that affects Seniors, Osteoporosis is certainly more common in the elderly. A news article that caught my attention was one that discussed how Patients With Osteoporosis Should Be Screened For Celiac Disease.
The amazing statistic I pulled from the article was this: "Our results suggest that as many as three to four percent of patients who have osteoporosis have the bone disease as a consequence of having celiac disease". Wow, that is a high enough percentage to be worth looking into Celiac being the root cause.
More importantly, this same study found "...study has shown that treating celiac disease with diet can restore bone health in these patients...". That sure sounds promising if you happen to be one of those suffering from Osteoporosis due to Celiac. _________________ Mike

I think I might be one of those - by the time I have my next bone density test next March I will have been GF almost a year and am really praying that all that calcium I take will have gotten where it's supposed to go. I'd sure love to give up the Fosamax. _________________ "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 |

Hmmm. I wonder if Sally Field knows this. Oh, wait. Neither she nor Boniva will make any more money if this news gets out! _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

I'm sure when the expensive pharma version becomes commercially available she will be happy to advertise it for proper remuneration _________________ Pat |

I just got my results back from my bone density and they put me on Fosimax.....well, I have the prescription......I have to get two teeth pulled that broke, and the doc told me not to start it till a month after the teeth get pulled.....I have more reading to do......not sure I want to take it.....I am borderline osteoporosis....I was 2.?.....right on that line......So, if I keep on my diet and take calcium, my bones will get better?

Have a long serious chat with your doctor before starting Fosimax. There have been some really serious complications involving jaw bones.
IF you take it, do so with eyes wide open. _________________ Sandi ~ learning to live in a world obsessed and infested with wheat.

I'm using Lactulose. Works for constipation, increases calcium uptake, tastes like...nevermind . Major side effect is gas. _________________ Pat |

I got Migraines from Fosimax. That meant 3 days every week that I was out of commission. I switched to Evista, and have had no problems. I did register as Osteoporosis, but with the Evista and exercise, I've had an increase in bone density. I now have Osteopenia. I'm hoping with the GF diet that it will be better yet next March when I get tested. _________________ Judy |

Annnnnd another piece falls into the puzzle. My doctor diagnosed me with bone density loss last year (mostly in my hips). The problem is genetic: my mom and grandmother have the same problems. The doc upped my calcium and vitamin D intake, but so far doesn't want me to try bone meds (like Boniva). But I've been GF since 2005. Shouldn't I recover some of the loss? _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
