Does anyone know what would be safe Mexican food? I'm craving it and don't want to become ill. We do not have any local chain ones around us, but vould travel about 45 minutes North, if I know I can eat danger-free.

I can eat tamales at our El Toritos without a problem. I haven't tried anything else.

You can make tamales in the comfort of your own home. Smile This recipe is delish! http://www.sonofthesouth.net/tamales/Tamale_Recipe.htm I've made it with help and without. Without help (but after getting through the learning curve of making them the first time) it took about 4 hours of work over 2 days (active work, not just cooking time). Not too bad really for quite a few lovely tamales in my freezer that are just wonderful.

The problem usually isn't with which foods are "safe", it is with the fact that even if your food is safe, the cross-contamination from other things at the restaurants will likely lead to unsafe regardless. Now, if you can find a restaurant where the owners and workers are really in tune with your diet, they may take enough precaution to ensure your safe food remains safe.

I love tamales, taquitos, tacos, nacho chips, and corn tortillas. All those *should* be just corn masa for the most part. And, the meats, beans, and such should be fine too. Now, sauces used could be an issue depending on if the restaurant makes their own and absolutely knows what is in them, or if they buy them. I had some enchilada sauce in a can here I was getting ready to use (assuming OK), only to see it had wheat flour in it.

So, you are facing a few issues that may make the restaurant choices a bit challenging. Perhaps you can try making some at home? Smile I find open-face corn-tortilla melts to be super simple to make -- just place some shredded chicken or pork on top of a corn tortilla on a griddle, melt some cheese over them, then serve with lettuce, tomato, salsa, etc.

Ditto with Mike on making them at home. That way you know everything's safe, and you can customize your meals (a must-have for me and nachos). Smile

Yeah, I got really sick a few months ago from cross-contamination at Baja Fresh...
That place has been crossed off the list!
And, as mentioned above, it is always better if you make things yourself!
