To Kinnicknick Bagel or Not?

Yesterday I was on the interstate and noticed a Wild Oats just off an exit. As I was making the return trip I decided to stop in because I was out of tamari. I haven't been to Wild Oats before because I have pledged my allegiance and paycheck to Whole Foods.

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of gluten free products they carry. They have a large section maybe 12 feet of various mixes, flour, crackers, pastas, cookies, etc. Then they have GF foods mixed into the all of the other sections. It's easy to determine which items are GF as they have a bullseye tag with 'Gluten Free' printed on it.

There is also a huge freezer section full of Kinnicknick goods where I spotted some bagels. It's been a long time since I've had my favorite lunch--a bagel spread with vegetable cream cheese and piled high with a myriad of fresh veggies. As I was looking at the package I started drooling thinking back on my all time favorite lunch.

Anyway, I'm not cheap but I've had my share of GF losers(I would be wealthy if I had all of the money my family has spent on duds!). So I asked several staff people if the bagels are any good or if they are regularly turned over. No one seemed to know the answer so I took the $5.25 plunge for 4 small bagels in hopes of a happy ending.

Today for lunch I decided to try one of these bagels. While it was not like the bagels in the big brown bag that my aunt used to bring when she visited us from 'the Village' it was pretty good. I neither had the veggie cream cheese nor a myriad of fresh veggies nor the inclination to procure them. So I topped the toasted bagel with a French triple cream cheese that I picked up yesterday and had it with some very thinly sliced Empire apples I got at the farmstand. It was a perfect lunch. Maybe tomorrow I'll have the veggie bagel...

TEC who strongly suggests no one go to stores that sell vast quantities of GF products, cheese or wine when starving.

I know they're pricey - but those little suckers taste good, don't they? LOL!

I totally ADORE the K donuts! Have you tried them??? (I love cake doughnuts)

I agree about the donuts. I'll gnaw on them frozen if I'm desperate enough. Never get in the way of an ostrich and her GF maple donut!

Mmmmm, tomato basil bagel with sundried tomato spread and thin slices of turkey...damnit, all this talk of bagels is making me hungry! Did they actually toast ok TEC?

Frozen Eggo waffles are one of the best snacks around!

Glad the bagels worked out. Once the donuts are gone I'll have to pick up a bag of those.

Guilty! I've eaten frozen K maple donuts too!

TEC, after your post, I may have to run out and get me some bagels. I've been afraid to try them too. But, bagels and cream cheese is one of my all-time favorites. I was too afraid I'd end up tossing the whole bag. I'm glad to hear the good reviews.

I've only found the maple ones online. Our Wild Oats only carries the Cinnamon, the chocolate dipped, and the vanilla dipped. I WISH they'd carry the maple, those things are YUMMMMY!!

My baby likes frozen waffles! He'll eat the frozen blueberry van's.... helps with teething! =)

Reading this thread has made me hungry. But, I don't recall ever seeing the Kinnicknick brand around here. I am still waiting for the Whole Foods store to open (since the WF website says there is one in progress), and once it does I'll be sure to try some of those.

I currently eat the Glutino Sans Gluten sesame bagels. Not bad for GF, though certainly not like a fresh made real bagel (I have vivid memories of good bagels yet!).

Just in case, Mike have you seen the list of store locations on the KK website? Our WF doesn't carry any KK food; I have to go to some hole-in-the-wall store to find it.

like everyone else.. reading this is making me so hungry. I've never tried the K. bagels, however, I have and didn't really like their donuts. Although, in desperate times.. I will dunk them in my coffee and cope! Wink

Has anyone tried the Enjoy Life bagels? We got the cinnamon/raisins... they're so small, but really yummy when toasted! We can't keep them in the house! They are heavy, but so soft inside... just like a real bagel! LOL
