OK - I have been up all night with my baby, so I have been doing a lot of thinking. I was even thinking things besides "For God's sake will you please GO TO SLEEP!"

What do you all think about posting recipes with oats in them? Do you think that would be a good or bad idea? Would it be a good idea if we posted them but included a disclaimer about oats and celiac (ie where to get GF oats, some dr's say to wait a year, talk to your dr first, etc). Or should we not post them at all?

I have my overdue 1 year bloodwork on Monday, so I kind of have oats on the brain right now.

Since we have access to GF oats, why not? I have a container in my pantry right now - whatcha got?

Maybe a disclaimer would be wise for newbies, we usually write GF before other words in recipes. Why not use 'GF Oats' when posting a listing?

I agree with Isto. The disclaimer would be a nice gesture for newbies.

I'd rather not mess with oats at all. Even if they claim to be GF.
I voted "not".

::shrugs:: doesn't matter to me really though, if it's decided to post oat recipes here, I just won't open them. It's not like I'm rabidly against oats. It's just unaffordable for me to buy the GF oats, and then in the back of my mind I would wonder if there really is cross contaminates. (BTW, I've stopped eating Oatios for the same reason. I felt guilty every time I ate them- wondering if I was doing something wrong. I figured if I felt I had to justify eating it, then I wasn't really supposed to be eating it.)

I do miss oatmeal cookies though.

I voted yes but with a disclaimer. I'd make the disclaimer a sticky so it's always on the top of the stack.

I don't think I'll ever be able to eat oats, but I always like looking through new recipes.

As we all know there are lots of newbies who come to this site. I'm afraid it would be confusing to them if they saw recipes for oats intermixed with the regular recipes. I believe both of the national organizations say a gluten free diet is one that is without wheat, rye, barley and oats. If you ask most celiacs which foods they stay away from they'll say oats as well and probably don't know why they stay away from oats.

While we have access to GF oats they are quite expensive and the shipping charges are high. As a result not everyone has access to oats due to financial concerns.

I am vehemently against adding oat recipes to the regular recipe folder.

An option for posting oat recipes would be to post them all in one thread. With a detailed disclaimer (including some basic research) and names and number of companies that sell GF oats. It would also be important to explain why maninstream oats are not GF safe(Quaker, Irish Oats, etc.). Then as recipes are added they'll just be added to the next post, not in a new thread. It would help if the discussion in an oat thread was kept to a minimum though. Otherwise it would take a while to find the recipes one is searching for.

I understand your concerns TEC. Would it also help to post alternatives to the oats? For example you could say in the recipe "1/2 c. of oats or 2 c. of Redmill hot cereal mix". I just don't know how well it would transition. I also agree with TEC that the disclaimer needs to be very, very detailed. With lots of bold, red text saying normal oats aren't safe, etc.

I'm not sure if alternative would help or not. If someone is making a recipe that calls for oats, most likely they're not going to test an alternative. I think the oat recipes just need to be contained somehow.

What makes a 'normal' oat? That I think is the issue. Most celiacs probably don't know the difference between GF oats grown to be GF and other oats.

I haven't fully thought this out yet...but I'm leaning towards TEC and her SBR Smile

It makes me nervous...particularly with newbies.

I'll ponder more on it...probably when I'm sitting at a wedding this afternoon.

The problem with the sticky idea is that Newbies don't know about the sticky's, at least I didn't and I think I'm a fairly inteligent although not terribly computer savy person. I'm on the fence, I don't use oats, (old school) although back when I was diagnosed we were told no buckwheat and I use it now all the time. I think its going to make work for Al who would have to monitor and keep it all together, so it would be his call in my opinion. We get oat recipes already though so maybe with a disclaimer and being contained it would be better than just poping up now and then.

There is no need for vehemence. I simply posed the question. Not trying to make work for anyone, not trying to get people offended, just asking. The only stupid question is one that is not asked, my mom always told me. I have seen people posting oat recipes on other celiac forums, and it was going to come up here eventually, so I thought I would get a feel for what people thought.

Once again, I am JUST ASKING. Chalk it up to sleep depravation. I don't have the energy to be vehement about anything today. Going back to the corner now.....

Wooeee Colleen! Did you read the entire sentence and then my next paragraph? I am against oat recipes intermixed in the REGULAR recipe folder, but not in an oat thread.

FWIW, I'm not offended. I didn't think your question was stupid. I don't think your trying to make work for anyone.

There's no need for you to be in the corner...unless you want the pizza an beer that Al has been hoarding.

what about for all of the recipes, you write

for example:
1/2 c. oats (gluten-free only, or alternative)

or something like that? for example, i use quinoa flakes in every single oat recipe of mine.
