I waited a whole year after diagnosis, so I figured I had earned some oats. I got my order from glutenfreeoats.com and tried them for the first time on Saturday. They were so delicious - just like I remember. They say to start out slow, 2 small servings the first week, 3 small servings the second and third week and as desired after that.
I didn't have any symptoms or problems with them, other than the yummy noises I was making.  I am so glad GF oats are available!

What form were the oats in (cookies, oatmeal, etc)? I'm glad you had such a wonderful experience with them.  Are they still $7/lb?

Colleen....congratulations on your bloodwork....good job! I know exactly how you feel as I had the same experience. Went from ridiculously high levels to low, low numbers and it is a good feeling, after all the hard work to establish
a gluten free lifestyle.
I, too, went a whole year without eating oats but when I did have them, I bought the McCann's oatmeal. I wouldn't trust Quaker as they just produce too many overly processed foods anyway but I have had absolutely no problems with the McCann's. I don't eat them every week but when I do, I feel great afterwards...no problemo! I couldn't live without oatmeal, I'm sure!
A quick question.....on your repeat bloodwork, did they do the whole panel or just a portion of it? Just curious as some recommend the whole panel again and some don't. Thanks! |

I just had oatmeal. I was afraid if I made cookies my son would want some, and he is just shy of his 1 year repeat bloodwork. With shipping, it was $16.95 for 2 lb 9 oz, so if my math is correct, that is $6.61/lb. They are definitely a luxury, and I won't be eating them all the time, but it's nice to have them available. It is cheaper if you order the larger quantities, but I want to make sure I am not in the percentage that can't tolerate them at all.
Noatak - for the repeat bloodwork, they only ran the ttg and the iga. My iga is still high, both because I have an unrelated liver disease and the fact that I just had a baby, but it came down over 100 points. 20 more points or so and it will be at the high end of normal.

As far as I know, McCann's oats are not safe. They do have dedicated equipment to clean the oats, but say nothing about how they keep wheat out of their oat fields. They are not certified gluten free by a third party.
There are only two companies in the US that make certified gluten-free oats, Gifts of Nature and Gluten Free Oats.

I've been consuming some certified-GF Oats a little at a time for the past month or two now, and so far so good. I too waited for a year (nearly two) before doing the oats thing, since I kept reading conflicting information about oats; but, now as soon as I could get the "certified" ones I did and I am glad. Oh how I love the taste of oats.
I still need to make some GF-Oatmeal cookies - I have planned to for over a month, and I really want to have some for the holidays. Glad to hear others are having a good experience with Oats too. This is great news for Celiacs, since oats taste great and are supposed to be a healthful grain. I hope that supply/demand balances out a bit with more certified-GF Oat suppliers coming online over the next few years, and hopefully dropping the price to under a couple bucks a pound -- but, I have a feeling it will take a decade for that to occur. Either way, I am happy I can consume oats even if at a premium (it's no differerent than all this other higher-priced GF food I guess)

That's what I'm waiting for. I think they're the most expensive GF food I've found.

Gluten Solutions has them for $8.99 for 35 ounces (more than 2 pounds), so that is a bit cheaper than the ones I originally ordered.

Hi,
I am new to the forum. I am interested in knowing more about oats. I have been told for so long that oats are a no no that it is stuck in my brain. I was shopping on Miss Roben's site and they have GF Rolled Oats.
I called and asked them and they said oats are gluten free but are contaminated when harvested with or near wheat & barley. The were tested and certified GF. I was so excited that I began thinking of the recipes that would open up to me.
I called the Celiac Sprue group and was told that they still have a miniscule % of gluten in them or contaminating them. I am confused and hoping that someone can share more.
I am very sensitive and a crumb or two from the kids sets me off.

Oats contain the protein avenin, which is technically different from the gluten in wheat, barley and rye. It is the gliadin in the wheat, the horedin in the barley, and the secalin in the rye that are the real culprits for celiacs. Avenin in oats causes some celiacs problems, but not all. There is a small subset of celiacs that cannot tolerate oats in any form, GF or not.
I would never consume any commercially available oats besides the ones that have been certified GF. At this point there are 2 manufacturers of GF oats, Creamhill Estates and Gluten Free Oats.
You should not consider oats until you have been dianosed for a year and have had your followup bloodwork done (according to my GI). Your antibodies should be in the negative range before you even try, and you should definitely discuss it with your doctor first. Many celiacs will not even chance it, and I totally respect their decision.
