Cause you know, it's our fault for needing to eat GF food, especially pasta.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

Maybe they can cook something on tin foil?
I hate to think you will have to bring/cook EVERYTHING on your own. We went to China with Rebecca and though it was not easy, it was doable. We had plain food served like steamed rice with steamed veggies. There were rice noodles in China too - but that's not what you will find where you are going.
Do bring as much as you can. For breakfast we brought cold cereal and added milk so we were fine for that meal at least....
Good luck... try not to stress out too much... and let us know how it goes... _________________ Amy - Mom to two kids, one with Celiac, and assorted pets... |

When we went on vacation, we brought along our own toaster. There are also Toast-It bags that you can buy. They are like little 'baggies' that you can put your own bread, french toast, reheat pizza, etc... in and use at 'public' toasters at hotels and such. If you ask, a lot of hotels have a mini fridge that you can get for your room as well.
If she likes corn or rice tortillas you could bring those along to make 'sandwhiches' from... even pb and jelly. _________________ Kim --

Oh yes - I forgot about the toaster bags. We have used them at my parents house when we go over there.... _________________ Amy - Mom to two kids, one with Celiac, and assorted pets... |

I talked to the chef yesterday. He was awesome. He said that his whole staff is well trained with all food allergies. He is going to come out and talk to us personally when we get there. Without my even asking, he addressed checking ingredients and cross contamination and that he will personally see to it that the area where her food is prepared and all pans/cooking utensils/etc used are clean and free of gluten. And he will be the one to prepare her food. He was super nice and seemed to be all over it. That makes me feel so much better and I am now excited to go instead of dreading it! _________________ Jessie

Jessie,
That's good to hear. Which place are you going to? I have found that "higher end" places are much more aware of this and generally have some training in it.
I will be going to Lombardi Steak House in Appleton for a business dinner. I have talked to Chef Matt a few times concerning GF. He too knew of cross contamination issues, etc.
Good luck!! Have fun! _________________ Al

We are going to the Water Park of America--it's right by the Mall of America in Minneapolis. We are staying at their hotel, The Grand Lodge and eating at the "nice" restaurant in the hotel, The Split Rock Grille. _________________ Jessie

Cool.
It's been a few years since I've been to MOA. There's a Napa Valley Grill there - definitely upper scale according to my wallet - but they were fantastic to work with. _________________ Al

Hii im not sure if you have gone on vacation yet but i can share some of the snacks that i like. Im pretty new to this but i went away for the day last weekend and i brought
cheetos
celery with skippy peanut butter (great snack)
mini carrots
and as you know string cheese
one of my favorite gf meals is plain white rice cooked in a skillet on the stove with egg. You can make this before you go and heat it up in the micro, i think that is a good meal
hope everything works out! |
