I spoke to a higher up in the GF Oat industry a few weeks ago. The person told me that Bob allegedly procures its GF oats from many, many different farmers who's harvesting processes aren't overseen. I was also told some information about their testing processes but I can't remember the details.
In the spirit of full disclosure, the person has an interest in the industry and is thus, biased. Regardless, some of the points seemed valid to me and as a result if I were to eat oats I would eat oats from a company that specializes in GF oats. |

Here is what Bob's web site says.
| Quote: | | Bob’s Red Mill stone grinds gluten free flours in a dedicated facility free from wheat and other gluten containing grains and derivatives. High quality-control standards are set in place in the gluten free facility and staff members are educated in good manufacturing practices. Ingredients are segregated and each line is thoroughly cleaned between production runs. The gluten free symbol informs the consumer that these products are not only produced in a dedicated facility, they are also batch tested for gluten before milling and after packaging. In an effort to better serve allergen sensitive consumers, the gluten free facility is also dairy and casein free. |
Since they are batch testing their oats, I feel the Bob's product is a safe choice. Somoene else's choice may be different from mine, but I feel OK about the oats from Bob's. _________________ -Colleen

I just found these in our local store. They cost the same as Lara's, but you get twice as much. Since they batch test them, I feel pretty safe with them.
The label says WHEAT FREE and they are considered GF, so hopefully I won't have any problems. _________________

It's my understand that BRM does not test every farmers oats. It's possible that they test a batch of oats 200 times but not every batch...does that make sense. No where does BRM give the specifics as to their testing practices. Wouldn't it be nice if those Elisa tests were more affordable??
You're right our choices are all different. I just thought I would share the knowledge I had been given. |

Despite TEC's interesting news, I decided to try BRM GF Oats.
Peg finally found some for me. She made me some apple crisp for T'giving.
Definitely an interesting experience. I'm not an oats eater. I used to eat oatmeal as a child, but not as an adult. 'Bout the only time I'd eat oats was in baked goods or granola.
From a taste standpoint - I can't say I noticed a great deal of difference in the topping from my old GF. Peg uses Quinoa.
From a texture standpoint - there was a big difference. Most definitely a bigger chew factor! Yeah, must be all that fiber. It's was fiberlicious!!
Will I have to have a bag of GF oats on hand at all times? Nah.
Is it nice to have that option? Yeah. _________________ Al

Did Peg toast the oats before she baked with them? I wonder if that would help cut some of the chewiness.
In February I want to do Elisa testing at our meeting. These oats are at the the top of my list!
Glad to hear that you didn't appear to have any problems with them. |

I don't know if Peg toasted them before hand or not. Is it standard practice to do such a thing? I'm going to guess...no she didn't.
Oh cool testing!! Do you have a test kit of some type? Please keep us updated!
Not I can't say I experienced any anomalies from consuming the oats. _________________ Al

I just thought I would add what I was told at FNCE, the representative from Only Oats out of Canada said they were the exclusive supplier to Bob's Red Mill on their GF verified oats, but who knows if they are aware Bob's may be getting oats from more than one source, that would make more sense to me. http://www.onlyoats.ca/index _________________ Debra,

I tried GF oats last year at 6 months GF and they definitely did not work for me. At the time I thought that it was too soon to try, but now that I know I have an IgG reaction to them, they are out forever. I LOVE oatmeal so I am really bummed. I miss chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. I'd do "cookies in a jar" (layered dry ingredients in a canning jar w/ a ribbon around the top) for holiday gifts in the past.
I'm glad you who are brave enough to try have more options now! _________________ Nance

Nance, can you do quinoa [flakes]? That's what we use to sub for oats.

As a matter of fact I have a box of quinoa flakes in the cabinet waiting for me to try. I hadn't come up with a way to use them except for hot cereal so maybe I'll use'em in some kind of dairy/gluten/soy/corn/yeast-free delight! Thanks Al.
