|

I'm a bit confused about gelato.
I LOVE gelato, but I was under the impression that gelato wasn't all that safe to eat. Needless to say, I've avoided it.
I eat only natural ice-cream - with nothing artificial - and I'm fine.
I saw a show with foodie, Rachel Ray, where she visted some gelato place and I noted that some of the ingredients she mentioned going into the mix was not safe - I think she even said some flour to make it thicker, I can't remember.
However, I saw an article today in the paper that said gelato is made with the same ingredients as ice-cream. So, I'm confused.
Sorry, long winded, but is gelato safe or not? Anyone have any ideas? _________________ Toni

Ok, I haven't found anything conclusive one way or the other, but I *did* find a restaurant in NYC that offers GF gelato and sorbets...

Also, there is an Italian company called Venchi that actually has GF gelato and they call attention to it on their Web site...

Theoretically, the only things that should be in gelato are milk and whatever flavors you want. If you don't want to take any chances you can always buy an ice cream machine and make your own.  _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

I'm with Ostrich - we have an ice cream maker & use it a lot (well, we also have 3 kids 11 and under).
I've tried different recipes & it's fun to play around. Mostly though, we just make smoothies and throw them in the ice cream maker (eg. milk, plain yogurt, couple of bananas, an apple, vanilla, touch of sugar...maybe some M&Ms in a blender...yum). Pretty healthy too. |

We have a man in my town who has two coffee shops (He has a sign: Friends don't let friends drink Starbucks!) and he imported a gelato machine from Italy.
He also makes some great, great pastries, which are no longer available to me.
I haven't tried his gelato, but I'm going to inquire.
Regarding the flour in the ice cream thing, I'd heard that Int'l House of Pancakes does the same thing with its scrambled eggs to fluff them out.
Any other intelligence out there regarding other places that boast breakfast fare, like Denny's, for example? _________________ Freed from Gluten, July 2006 |
