I only have one book recommendation, my all time favorite book:

Light fluff with some romance, some history-fiction based on the real life of a geisha- Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

The movie was not represenative of the book.

Hope your foot heals fast, I'm going to look for the VH1 Rev-Run show, it sounds like something I might like.

Baby steps TEC! If I think of any more not-so-scary SK books I'll let you know. Perhaps if you do big puppy eyes at Al he'll send you some Fudge Puddles? Laughing

You could also try out The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (book 1 of the His Dark Materials series). It's heavier on the fantasy, but extremely engaging. And yes, it's being released as a movie this Christmas. (Nicole Kidman is the perfect actress for the roll of Marisa Coulter!)

RD: I'm a fan of Memoirs, though I've only seen the movie. Is the book that much better?

For avid book readers out there who want to own books I would recommend e-bay over amazon. I get all of my books at auction now and save a bundle, even better than the half price book store as I buy the lot items. That's how I have run across some of the others I listed as their books were in lots I bought of authors I was familiar with. I read a book a day (I don't do tv and I read fast) this is the only way I can afford to do it.

No, I haven't read "Little Alters Everywhere". I have some dvds due back at the library on Saturday (tomorrow) so I'll go check it out. In this little southern town, I can almost bank on the fact that they'll have it! LOL!

I thought of another one maybe: "A Cool Moonlight" by Angela Johnson

"Lila doesn't remember the sun. When she was just a baby, doctors discovered a rare and dangerous allergy to sunlight. From then on, she has been hidden from the day- staying covered up indoors until dark, and enjoying the fresh air only at night under the moon's glow. She adores the company of her older sister, but she still longs for more. She longs to know the sun's touch.
And she has a plan to do so! On certain nights, when Lila is alone, she is visited by two lively girls who wear tutus and costume wings, who dance with her and tell her wonderful stories. These mysterious friends have promised to help Lila feel the warmth of the sun on her skin.

Lyrical and surprising, this is a story that will wrap tight around you and leave you forever changed. A story about courage, hope, and the healing power of love."

I thought it was really good. It's told from Lila's perspective. I know it's juvenile fiction, but I sometimes like them to refresh my head with their simple words and ::shrugs:: I guess I just like them. LOL!

Really hoping your foot heals quickly!

Yes, Yes, Yes---read the book, if you liked the movie you'll absolutely love the book. It's out in paper back so you can find it cheap on Amazon or at the library.

"Marley & Me" is an absolutely wonderful book. Really endearing story and an easy read, too...

Right now, I am reading "The Juror" by John Grisham. I'm not usually a Grisham fan, but this one has been pretty good so far...

"Wicked" and "Son of a Witch" are both fabulous. I really enjoyed both of those. I didn't really like the other Maguire books as much--they were ok, but "Wicked" was great and the Broadway show was AMAZING!!!

"A Winter's Tale" by (I think Mark) Halperin is also very good...

Wicked is great. I would suggest you read the book before you see it. I had only finished 1/2 of the book...wish I had been able to finish it first.

I don't think that'll be an issue. NE isn't exactly known for its theatre. Wink

Anything by Patricia Cornwell - best are her Kay Scarpetta (main character) series.

Hope bones mend quickly.

I am so glad this thread was atarted recently (but not glad TEC hurt her ankle). It has been so long since I read anything for pleasure. Mostly I read cookbooks and books about learning how to DO things. But this discussion inspired me to pick up several books. I am reading "The Red Tent" and listening to the second book in Stephen King's Gunslinger series on my commute. It really is nice to read a book once in a while!

How is your healing going, TEC?

I'm glad the thread inspired you to pick up a book for the sake of pleasure! I've read quite a few of the books that you all have recommended. I'm so fortunate that I can order the books online and then have someone pick them up at the library's drive through. I also found a few gems a couple of weeks ago when I got a ride to the library. I'll post the titles tomorrow.

Regarding the foot, I'm still in the boot and am now allowed to put full weight on it, thank gosh! Just this week though it's started swelling again and there are two suspicious looking bruises. I go back to the MD on Monday. My physcial therapist spoke to the MD so she's forewarned me about what's to come....another week in the boot and then an air cast for 4-6 week. If I'm lucky I'll be able to drive by Labor Day! Rolling Eyes My mantra is...it could have been my wrist and my foot, it could have been my wrist and my foot.

A couple of months ago I stumbled upon an author I had not read before. Her name is Lois Battle. Since then, I've read Bed and Breakfast and The Florabama Ladies Auxiliary & Sewing Circle. I like her writing style and her southern characters.

Right now I'm half way through another of her books titled War Brides which is interesting, but not really my cup of tea.

I'm looking forward to reading her other books as time allows.

I know this is an old topic, but I just finished reading the final Harry Potter book. Anybody that wants to talk about it, PM me! Smile (don't post spoilers here)
