Just wondering if anyone knows of muscle inflammation with celiac disease.
Also, can you have it with the test saying negative? I read that it is possible like with RA and how you don't need the factor to actually have the disease.
Thanks. |

Not sure about muscle inflammation but I get all sorts of general inflammation if I get glutened. I have bursitis (bursa of the joint inflammation) in my hips and some tendonitis issues in my wrists and shoulders and foot. I'm a very active person and certain things, such as heavy weight training, do actually result in minor muscle tearing and rebuilding - my theory is that gluten somehow promotes the inflammation throughout my body, magnifies it or something.
Put it this way - if I'm gluten free I can teach my classes and run 20 miles a week and lift and only have the very mild soreness one would expect. If I gluten myself I am sore enough that I have trouble sleeping and must take tylenol or ibuprofen. It's taken me awhile to get this - now if I am exceptionally sore (rare), I take a good look at my diet to see where the gluten got in. |

I have fibromyalgia. It causes me to even hurt sometimes just to touch my skin. My muscles burn and feel as if I have been out running a 50 mile marathon.
If I remember correctly it is one of those 'sister' things that can come along with celiac like thyroid problems or diabetes.
I am in the midst of a really bad flare with the fibro. Rest is about all I am doing for the last 2 weeks. (I have my DD's wedding to pull off in 4 weeks....can't afford to be wasting my time like this.)
I hope you get to the bottom of your problem and you feel better soon! _________________

If you have Fibro, I hardly think resting can be classified as "wasting" your time! If you don't recharge the batteries, the batteries will remain empty and then where will you be??? PLEASE don't beat yourself up because you have to do so much- it will get done, just not on your timetable maybe! You have to rest or your energy level will be so low when she gets married that you'll hardly feel like being there!

NorthernElf,
I've been going back through some of these topics that I haven't had time to go through over this summer.
I have the same issues as you do as far as muscle pain! Before I went gluten free I would work out... (lifting weights but not over doing it), and my muscles would be sooo sore for about 5 days instead of the general soreness for a couple days like a person would normally have.
Since going GF this has gotten a lot better... but my muscles still feel a little more sore than usual at times... nothing like they were. But... I'm still getting the hang of this diet and I think I've been getting a little bit here and there not realizing it.
I just wanted to respond and and say that I've been searching for anyone that has had this same problem with muscles, and until now I haven't read about anyone having this symptom. This is a big help to me! Gives me a little more assurance that it really is from the gluten!
Did it take you a long time after going GF for this problem to get better? And, if you get glutened do your muscles seem to get more sore for about 1-2 weeks?? |

Gluten affecs my muscles, joints and bones to varying degrees. When glutened I get some specific pains, and then a general malaise all over my body. I gave up on ibuprofen (didn't seem to work anymore after 20-odd years and I want to be gentle to my gut), and now use arnica tincture and peppermint essential oil (topically) along with a hot pack to alleviate some soreness. The soreness can last up to 2 weeks after a glutening. _________________ Nance

I feel the exact same way... along with very sore muscles after exercising if I've eaten gluten.
Thanks nancw!!! This really makes me more confident that this muscle soreness and aching all over in my muscles is due to the gluten!! I sometimes start worrying that there's something else going on that I still don't know about. I've only been at this since March after feeling horrible for months so I'm still trying to figure some things out!!
Thanks again!!

Keep at it Rachel. It can take some time before things get back to "normal".

I know you don't want to hear this [that's why I'm ducking ], but give yourself 6 - 12 months. I know it took me a while before I really felt 100%.
It took me a good year before I became fully comfortable with my food choices. There's a steep learning curve to all this - it's frustrating - no doubt about it! _________________ Al

*grin* Al -
I think I must have really been feeling crappy (no pun intended... ) but I've recently resumed a serious workout schedule (taking aerobics classes, actually working out at least 4x/week etc.) and I bounce back a LOT faster than I used to. (Which is good - I have a lot of "ugh I have no energy and am stressed out" weight to lose! )
For reference, I've been GF since early March. |

Hey Rachel,
I've been away and I just saw your post.
Being GF DEFINITELY keeps the worst aches & pains away. I don't know how long it took since I've been GF for a few years, with the occasional screw up ! I'm not sure if how long one is GF counts (after a certain point) as much as how often one gets glutened accidentally. I found at first that I thought I was GF and often was getting a small amount or some contamination without realizing it.
I also find exercise is a great coping mechanism for me. It doesn't seem to work for everyone but I find that when I get mildly glutened, say from cross contamination, going for a run or something HELPS ! I teach classes too and it all helps - just being active. |

I find that I feel better when I exercise too, now that I'm GF. It's hard at times to get myself to do it when I don't feel 100%... but I always feel better after I do it. It helps keep my energy up too... I've had issues with tiredness for the last year. That has gotten a little better over time as long as I stay away from gluten.
I think it also helps me stay more positive with this whole thing too! Sometimes I can get "down" with this whole transition, the frustration with staying gluten free, and some symptoms that don't want to completely go away after being GF for 4 months (but are much better). And I've always been a really active person so being able to do the things that I used to do, and feel good doing, makes me feel much better. |
