I was diagnosed with CD at the beginning of April based on a blood test. I didn't pursue further test to confirm the diagnosis but responded very well to a gluten free diet.
Currently I have been getting a burning sort of pain (don't know how to describe it) in my right side between my hip and my rib cage. I usually have been able to correlate the pain with being lax about the GF diet, but recently I have been super careful and today I started to have the same pain again and I can't think of where I might have eaten gluten (unless minuet maid grapefruit juice or trident gum is not GF). I was wondering if this pain could be caused by CD or if it is more likely to be something else that I need to get checked out. My family does have a history of gallbladder problems. |

Regardless if it's from celiac or not, you should still see your doctor. "Odd" pain is never to be shrugged off - and remember, we're not doctors ourselves! I've had pain there, but that was for reasons unrelated to celiac, and definitely see what it is for you. Good luck. _________________ Gluten-free, vegan blog: Whisking & Writing

Could be small intestine or your colon. (Gallbladder is up on the right hand side kinda under your lowest rib - though I guess pain can travel). Definitely get into see a doc ASAP as it may not be related to the CD. _________________ Cheers!

Right side pain was the only thing my daughter could communicate to me when she was very little ( 18 months-2 yrs). It was the way she would bend to the side and hold her side while crying that really scared me. That obvious sign of pain was of no matter to the doctors she was seeing but it was key to me. The diagnoses came because of her constant D and anemia. I have often seen boards where other Celiac sufferers are experiencing pain just below the ribs on the right. No one has offered an answer yet as to what causes this and why it seems to eventually go away but it sure seems significant to me. I hope you find your answer but until then know you are not alone. ~Duchess
PS Juleah stopped complaining of side pain somewhere around her second year of being GF and it was markedly decrease in severity and frequency within about two months if memory serves me. |

| I get this - I think it is dyspepsia (related to reflux, a common issue with celiacs). It's usually when I have been "bad". |

| I would definitely go to the doctor since one possibility is it could be your appendix. I will post what happened to me this week separately. But pain in the right side could be indicative of a rupturing appendix. |

I have been having some washroom symptoms lately. I am not sure what I ate or if it is what I ate, but this time maybe it was. I was on vacation last week and careful as I was I am afraid something slipped through.
Anyway I am also having right side pain. Feels kind of like a muscle pull although it hurts to touch. It is getting better along with ummm the other problem. I know it is not my appendix as I had that removed long ago.
I have been GF for almost a year now and have not purposely "glutened" myself. I had "classic" symptoms by the time I was diagnosed. Food ran right through me, weight loss, osteopenia etc...
I do not know for sure what symptoms I will get when "glutened" I know they are different for everyone. The thing is, the symptoms started 3 days after I returned from vacation. At home I went right back to my old routine. So I am 99.999% sure if I was glutened it was not here.
Could it take that long to appear? With the right side pain mentioned here I am thinking maybe. |

Just an FYI on a couple of things that might be causing you issues....
1) Gluten Free items can still contain gluten based products. There is no standard for labeling items as gluten free... some of the exemptions that can still appear in your food and cause problems are the following.
"The list of exemptions for gluten, according to the Guidance Notes on the Food Labelling (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2004 are as follows (2);
Wheat based glucose syrups including dextrose.
Wheat based maltodextrins.
Glucose syrups based on barley.
Cereals used in distillates for spirits. "
Exerpt taken from:
http://www.coeliac.co.uk/food_business/producers_and_retailers/149.asp
Dextrose can be found in ALMOST EVERYTHING including sausages, prepared meats, and other forms of gluten can be found on the back of stamps or envelopes and even lipsticks.
Depending on your sensitivity to gluten, you may need to try avoiding these as well. Dexrose is a problem for me.
If you went on vacation in a foriegn country becareful of things that you assume to be safe... Carmel color in Coca cola and other sodas can be made from wheat based products instead of corn since it is a cheaper alternative, when made outside of the US. On my honey moon to Costa Rica, I discovered this the hard way.
2) Cysts and Gynecological issues.
I have suffered from the same EXACT pain that you are describing. It ended up that I had stage 2 endometriosis and a cyst the size of a tennis ball in my right ovary. Sometimes the abdomen creates reffered pain, and you feel it in other areas than the actual site it is origionating from. It is always good to seek help of your OBGYN if you are female... and if you are male, it is always good to make sure the problem is not reproductive in nature.
Best of luck and hope that you feel better soon! |
