My daughters first cousin was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's and since it is also an autoimune disease, my sister-in-law asked me if Rebecca's thyroid was OK or if this could be related. I know nothing about Hashimoto's except that it is auto-immune and has to do with the thyroid. Can anyone lead me to a link between this and Celiac? Does this mean that my niece might also have undiagnosed celiac? She has a host of other problems so I wouldn't wish another one on her - but at least with celiac there is something a parent can do beyond sitting back and watching your child suffer.
Thanks - and Al, if this is in the wrong part of the forum, please feel free to move it. _________________ Amy - Mom to two kids, one with Celiac, and assorted pets including 9 mice |

There's a couple of thyroid threads on here.
Hashi's causes the body to attack the thyroid, so it produces too little hormone. This causes fatigue, weight gain, sluggishness, and brain foginess.
The good news is that with a pill once or twice a day for the rest of your life it can be easily controlled.
I have it. I'm on armour thyroid. $12 a month (so cheap it's less than my copay, so I order from drugstore.com every 3 months), pill twice a day, not a big deal.
The pills should not be taken with food. Make sure the doc told the niece this. If she does take them with food make sure it's the same every day so that it'll get factored into the amount she takes.
There are many autoimmune diseases. Having one predisposes you to others, but it doesn't mean you will have them all. _________________ Lauren

Yep...Hashimoto's is at least something that's treatable.
(Levoxyl here, great results now that I'm GF and absorbing the meds again, and even the non-generic isn't that expensive. (THe same endocrinologist that ordered the celiac panel wants me on it because she's positive it's GF (and so I am I - I double-checked her.
Edit: Something else to add - some supplements and foods, especially Calcium, can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. What I've read says avoid calcium supplements within 4 hours of taking thyroid hormone. I normally take my thyroid 1st thing in the AM, and calcium in the afternoon and before bed. |
