Ok - so a yogurt has no gluten ingredients in the list but I think I had a reaction to it - possible ???
I have a sinus infection so grabbed some raspberry cranberry yogurt because I am taking antibiotics. Ugh - unfortunately, sinus issues are part of my reaction to gluten so I feel pretty awful...
I can't think of anything else that was different and could have caused the reaction. If it was the yogurt, it wasn't a huge dose of gluten - just enough for me to get a pounding headache and be cranky & very tired (no digestive symptoms, except maybe no appetite). |

Hey Elf,
Have you had any other reactions to dairy products? Casein - the protein in dairy - gives me similar reactions to those you listed. Starts in the sinuses for sure.

What was the brand name of the yogurt? Some have better track records than others. Dannon, for example, does not consider most of their yogurts GF.

Their flavored yogurts maybe GF, they're just not saying for sure. They are erring on the side of safety. The summer issue of Gluten Free Living has an article about Dannon and their yogurt.
Their plain yogurts ARE considered safe. The other ones may not be because the natural flavors may contain stabilizers that come from a gluten containing ingredient.
It common practice for flavoring companies to use ethanol as a base to support and carry the flavor. That ethanol is derived from a gluten bearing source.

Since wheat must be disclosed in labeling - it would have to be listed for natural flavors - it's not there. Dannon says it's yogurt does not contain wheat. What's left? Barley & rye. The Renewable Fuels Assoc. says ethanol can be made from any starch or sugar. BUT ethanol is always distilled [per the communications director of the Flavor & Extract Manufacturers Assoc]. We know that distilling makes the distillate GF.
So, Dannon says "We don't know if barley or rye are used, so we can't tell you for sure it's GF". La Yogurt does the same thing.
Dannon is waiting to see what happen with the new labeling laws to see what kind of impact it will have on it's GF Safe status.

I'm in Canada - not sure if we'll have the same labeling laws as you !
The yogurt was Dairyland.
I don't have milk issues, just lactose ones (in larger amounts). |

Did you call the manufacturer and ask them if the product is safe? What did they say? |

I don't know if this helps or not, but Yoplait yogurt is gluten free. I was pleasantly surprised that when I read the label it says gluten-free right on the package. I know for sure that the strawberry, strawberry-banana, and strawberry-kiwi are GF.

Gosh, I dreamed of reading gluten free on a package of something last night and being so excited about it (can't remember what it was though). Yikes. |

The Wal-Mart brand of yogurt is GF, but I've just narrowed it down to yogurt that is making me feel like I have the flu. I get a headache and the shakes, then my heart races and I feel very nauseas. I don't know if it's a lactose thing, or the corn syrup, but I'm reacting to SOMETHING in the GF yogurt, so...

Did WalMart verify this? I've never seen the yogurt labeled GF.

Yes, it's actually labeled GF. They've been pretty good at labeling there -- their own brands, that is. Great Value. It's the only reason I gave it a try, because I was trying to see if I had a reaction just to Activia or yogurt in general. It is almost like it took some time for me to figure out it's yogurt in general, because I don't think it hurt me at first...

I was shocked when dairy, including yogurt, caused the same reaction for me. I assume it is casein as opposed to lactose.
Those symptoms are the same ones I recognize when I react to any suspect food.
