My biggest problem living GF is not knowing what to eat for protein. Last week I thought, maybe I'll try to eat lots of cheese, with taking a lactose supplement prior. So I ate lots of cheese. My skin broke out like crazy. I stopped that and my skin is fine now. But what do celaic runners/ athletes do for protein intake. I bought a big can of whey protein powder. But everytime I use it (with a lactose pill to be on the safe side) I end up with stomach/ intestinal trouble. (It is GF powder.)
any suggestions?????

Heidi

Hi Heidi,

Do you like or can you have poultry, beef or seafood?

Meat, nuts, legumes.

Beans and rice eaten together make a complete protein just as dairy and nuts. Every night a friend always had an ice cream sundae...a scoop of ice cream topped with what appeared to be equal portions of peanuts.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yup, those meats I am fine with.. What about a quick snack? Something not full of sugar and other crap like preservatives added?
Is there any harm in eating too much peanut butter(all natural)?
Unfortunately, I have always had a food sensitivity to almonds, or they would be good choice.

How about mix up a batch of trail mix with different nuts (except almonds!), raisins, chocolate chips and things? Or try Lara bars or some other gf bar with protein. Or boiled eggs. One of the best ways to have a quick snack when you've got food sensitivites is to make big batches of things so when you get home, you can just grab some and eat it.
I eat a ton of peanut butter and have never had any harm from it. Especially since you're a runner, it should be fine. I used to run and I ate a lot of oatmeal with peanut butter. Or peanut butter and chocolate. Very Happy

Also if whey powder give you problems, there is also hemp protein powder. Definitely get the flavored kind though.

What about other nut butters, besides peanut and almond? You could put it on fruit or some GF rice cakes. Both tend to fill me up pretty quick, but I'm not a runner.

If you find some GF (usually corn) tortillas you can add your favorite meats/cheeses/peanut butter/whatever and make your own roll-ups to go.

What whey protein?

Many have nutrasweet in them, and that could be a problem. Plus if you have lactose intolerance it'll probably take your body a while to adjust to digesting milk proteins, since it hasn't had to deal with that much of them at once in a long time.

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions. Yes, being prepared is totally key, I can't forget that. That's how you get stuck with "nothing to eat".
The whey protein is by SISU, and states that it's gluten free. No nutra sweet. But as it is basically a milk product it must be hard to digest. What a waste of money. Forty bucks. That ticks me off. But the nuts and things I will definitely make sure to have on hand, including the chocolate.

I have whey protein on a regular basis, and it just took me a little while to adjust to it. After that, it's not as bad.

Runner here !

Not sure why you need whey protein just 'cause you run. Never tried it myself.

I eat a lot of eggs (my cholesterol is low anyway). I also eat nuts and nut butters. Meat is good (chicken, fish, lean beef) - leftovers are always a good thing - I make extra so there is leftovers.

Can tuna or salmon is also good, you can buy those little single serving tuna tins.

Costo has Bora Bora "granola" bars that are nut filled and good (for about 140 calories).

Cheese isn't the best protein source anyway since it is so high in fat. If you can tolerate yogurt, plain yogurt with a decent bacteria count is good (my favs are the yogurts that only have milk and bacteria culture as ingredients).
