Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been on in ages... I've just been so busy that I haven't had much of a chance!!
I was just wondering if anyone had any 'feel better' suggestions?
I went over to my cousins 4th birthday party yesterday (which was so cute!) My cousin Jen knows all about celiac so she made me a special gluten free lunch. I got so incredibly sick that I was pretty much stuck in the bathroom for most of the afternoon. We searched the labels on everything I have eaten, the GF lasagna checked out ok, but it ended up being these little wrapped chocolates on the table. The ingredients on the box said they had malt in them. I love chocolate and am usually ok when I eat it, I guess I just need to not assume.
Anyways.. I was just wondering what people did/do when they are having their stomach problems. I took pepto bismol when I got home to help soothe my stomach and just rested and waited for it to pass. Is there anything else that helps it to feel better?? Also, my stomach still isn't right today from it, any suggestions on what I could do?? |

Hi Wendy,
Sorry you got so sick. It must have been the weekend for chocolate problems. I ate a dove ice cream bar last night, which I thought was okay, and ended up feeling horrible all night. I guess I won't do that again.
Anyway, I put one of those heat things (that you heat up in the microwave and usually put around your neck) on my stomach and it kind of helped ease some of the pain a little. Hopefully someone else will post some good ideas.
Feel better.

Hi Wendy,
Sorry to hear you're feeling under the weather. Yup - malt could do it to ya
Drink lots of water - keep flushing your body.
Alkaseltzer GOLD (make sure it's gold - it's GF) is supposed to help. I have not tried it tho.
Hope you feel better soon!!
Chris - as far as I know - the Dove products are GF - minus the sandwich cookie type thing I think they have. What specifically did you have? Maybe we could check it out. Does all icecream bother you? Maybe there's a dairy intolerence going on too. _________________ Al

Hi Al,
I had the ice cream bar with the chocolate coating. I haven't been having a problem with ice cream, but I haven't eaten too much of it since being diagnosed. Maybe it was something else last night, but it came on pretty much right after the ice cream bar that's why I assumed it was that. It used to take longer for me to react to something, but these days it seems to happen right away.
Hope you had a nice holiday weekend.

Hi Chris,
Here's what I found:
Dove Ice Cream except Crunchy Cookie in USA
M & M Mars will clearly list wheat and barley in the products. The rep said they did not use oats or rye in the candy
Yup - we had a good holiday weekend. Too short as usual!!

Thanks Al. I guess it was something else. Great, now I have to figure out what!!
Take care,
Chris
P.S. I did have one more question. I am in the process of getting my children checked (with the celiac panel). So far my daughters' results came back negative and I'm still waiting for my sons. If they all come back negative is it safe to assume they will never have it? Or can it show up later in life? _________________ Chris |

Hi Chris,
Good question! Just because they don't have it now...does not mean that they won't ever get it. It is felt that there is a trigger that starts it. Infection, illness, stress, over use of anti-inflammatory meds, etc are felt to be triggers. I definately would keep an eye on them tho. If they have symptoms - keep that in mind. I don't know if there is a protocol for continuing to do follow up celiac panels to verify it.
Ahhh yes, gluten is a sneaky devil!! _________________ Al

Wendy,
I'm sorry to hear of your run in with gluten. Are you feeling better now?

This is a good question.. do you mind sharing what you ended up doing to help you feel better, or did you just ride it out with the pepto bismol?
I'm having bit of the same problem with Matthew (my 2yr old) Dad bought some Strawberry Jelly for his sandwhiches. Well, one day last week, he had a day of the big D! and again 2 days this week, after I put my thinking cap on I realized that he had one pb&j sandwhich last week with that jelly, and 2 or 3 this week. Yesterday it really hit him.. my son who's been potty trained for several months had to be put in a pull up yesterday, he couldn't control himself. I looked carefully at the label. The jelly didn't have wheat or dairy in it, but it was processed on machine which also processed wheat and dairy.
With him being two it's really hard for me to know besides the big D where else he hurts or how to help him feel better. Needless to say, we got rid of the Jelly and bought one that is safe.
Sorry to go on, I hope you're feeling well now. |

Do you indeed have the gene? Did you mean you had the children checked for the gene? If you have the gene you could be ok for years, like me, till now! However, there is that chance of being the individual who is asymptomatic too. They eat everything under the gluten sun and have active CD just don't feel anything nor complaints whatsoever.
This is just my opinion though. I have this gene and have the MC gene as well; often times these two diseases are sketched together because of the gene family. I just know I'm feeling better now since gluten has been out of my system. I can't tolerate other food groups and am having a York assay of myself done some time next week. I hope I can still eat peanuts, cashews and peanut butter as they will be testing me for those too. OOOO Corn too. Gads, everyhting GF I've been eating so far (well, almost all) has some corn derivative! < yee gads _________________ I Am Someone Special

Yes.. I'm feeling alot better now thanx. I take the pepto to help slow down the D, but I tend to have to ride out the pain which is no fun.
I hope your son is feeling better too! |

| There is a medicine that is prescription that can help with the pain and I can't live without it. It is called Librax. It's a green capsule and it is a lifesaver to me. Ask your physician for a prescription of it. It puts your stomach to sleep but not you. Also I have decided every morning to take a Pepcid AC weather I need it or not just to maybe help wart off or slow down some of the symptoms if I goof up since I am new at this. But with the Librax, I have kept it on hand for years for when the kids got tummy aches or me because I had problems for several years without knowing that CD is what I had. I kept thinking I was having an allergic reaction to something else I ate since I am allergic to so many foods. Also, get a heating pad. I had a major CD attach over the weekend and I didn't have a heating pad so I got in a hot tub and splashed hot water on my stomach until my fiance trudge out at 2 in the morning to get me a heating pad. Does wonders. |

I have a question about Librax and your symptoms. When I have IBS flare ups, I tend to have constipation, not diarrhea. Does it stop you up at all or just relieve the discomfort?
Thanks! _________________ Stephanie |

| No it doesn't stop you up at all. It just stops the pain in your stomach that has you bent over because you hurt so bad. I know this sounds really gross but I want to give you a suggestion for the constipation. I use to do it with my kids when they got constipated and it worked very well. Get a finger cott and put it on your finger. Get some KYgel and lubricate your figer very well and your rectum and insert your finger and make like circles a couple of time as high up as you can then remove your finger. The gel lubricating the inside of the rectum helps makes it easier to get the waste out of your body. My oldest had constipation really bad and often and that really helped her and it didn't hurt so bad. Hope it works. |

THanks for the info. Actually, my constipation is pretty well under control - I consume a lot of fiber. I have found that grinding my own flax meal finer than that I buy in the store helps more than the pre-ground. Anyway, I use it every day and it really helps me in general, even when I'm not having those problems.
Many of the IBS meds are designed to help with diarrhea and that isn't my problem 80% of the time so I am reluctant to try them.
