Anyone who knows me knows I love a good bargain. I thought I was good in the past, but today takes the cake. We are redoing out kitchen. Our replacement of a broken dishwasher has snowballed into a complete kitchen remodel. We have been shopping around for kitchen cabinets and settled on a knock-down kind that we liked. The home improvement store (I won't mention the name, but it rhymes with Home Depot) had some on celearance that we decided to buy and special order the rest.
When we got to the front, and they started to ring up the cabinets, we found that they had been discontinued in the systen, and the were ringing up at $.01. They hemmed and hawed about it, but after all was said and done, they sold us a whole boatload of cabinets and oak cabinet doors for a penny each! We went to all the other stores in the area and cleaned them out of lots of other doors in other styles, and now we have enough to put in cabinets in our bathroom and family room too! We only had to spend $500 or so to get the remaining cabinets for our kitchen!
What is your best bargain ever? It can be one of GF food, or one on something completely unrelated. Looking forward to hearing from other cheapskates out there. _________________ -Colleen

Way to go Colleen!!!! I love a good bargain too. I'm probably the East-Coast Queen of Cheap! While I was growing up my mother's favorite refrain was, "Use it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without." And I'm sure that my DD's probably heard me say the same thing many times.
Just recently I went to a bakery wholesaler in our area that also sells to the public. I've been cooking with Roben Ryberg's cookbook a lot, so have been going through a lot of potato starch and cornstarch. The price of potato starch at the health food store has been running about $2.69 lb., and cornstarch at the grocery store has been $.99 lb. At this distributor I was able to buy 50 lb. of cornstarch for $17 (a saving of $33) and 50 lb. of potato starch for $23 (a saving of $112!!!). They showed me the information sheets they had on the products, and I saw nothing that raised CC red flags, and have been using them with no ill effects. I'm just always very careful to wipe down the outsides of bags from there in case a broken bag of flour has been near them, but I do that from the health food store, and grocery too. Paranoid, I guess. I love that by buying in bulk I save money, and don't have to run to the store constantly for those tiny 20 oz. bags.

I once bought a good dozen T-shirts for about $5. Does that count? It was forever ago. DH and I will be getting new cell phones for about $60 soon.
Hey Colleen, do you like Lowes or Home Depot better? I seem to have better luck with Lowes. They'll match anybody's price and take 10% off on top of that. We'll be hitting them up soon for a water softener. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={
