My cholesterol was 64. I thought this extremly low for a person who now eats all she wants of everything. I actually ate 2 steaks at the Golden Corral one time, okay maybe more then once. I'm just starving all the time. People I work with are complaining I am making them fat eating all the time.
So can your cholesterol be too low? Is this a problem or a good thing? |

Can your cholesterol level be too low?

Are you currently eating at Golden Corral?
Sometimes those with CD have low cholesterol levels simple due to the fact that they are not absorbing properly. Once their villi heal [and they start absorbing properly again], the levels should go back up. Have you had any followup Celiac testing done? Docs will check for dietary compliance. Maybe you still have some absorption issues? That might explain constant hunger and low cholesterol readings. _________________ Al

This topic is interesting. I'm going to see the doctor in October. My lab tests from 3 1/2 years ago (and before I knew anything about celiac and gluten intolerance) show the following:
Cholesterol 94
Triglyceride 39
I was also anemic. My recent EnteroLab results show severe malabsorption. Hmmm...I wonder if my cholesterol will go up as I heal?! |

Definitely an interesting topic. My dad's cholesterol was always very low, at least under 100, as low as 64 in the last several years. I'd bet a lot of money that he was gluten intolerant, although he would never see a doctor about his GI problems. Mine has always been in the 90's, but I haven't had it checked since I've been GF. I'll definitely be curious to see how it changes. _________________ Jen

Very interesting! My cholesterol (and blood pressure) have always been very low too. I'm not sure if it's hereditary or because of the GF thing. _________________ Ostrich :>--O==={

My blood pressure has always been low. Used to be the nurse or doctor would ask or look through my chart to compare and then say "Oh well if it's always been that low, than it is fine " Of course, I was not fine. But most of us have been through that.
Since going GF my BP is in the normal range, actually the high of the normal range and my cholesterol (I cannot remember the exact number) was in the normal range but was just below where they start telling you to watch it.
So I went from being low in both to now waching as I do not want them to go up any more than they have already.
I think absorbtion is a likely culprit. |

Interesting! I follow a cardiologist's blog that has found a wheat free/ gluten free, diet instrumental in controlling cholesterol levels, plaque growth, and weight too in his patients. Makes you wonder how many Americans have a gluten problem.

FWIW, my total cholesterol dropped over 70 points in the year following going GF. My HDL went up and my LDL went wayyy down. _________________ Nance

Personally I don't find this to be true. I have had CD for 21 years and this past year have been fighting Cholesterol issues, the only reason I'm not on meds is because I had a negative reaction to them. So I treat it with diet. It is NOT the same diet that I have followed for years for the CD. I have a family history of Cholesterol issues and I wonder some times if it would have been worse if I didn't have CD, but that's just a guess. _________________ CD by Biopsy 3/25/88 |

I don't think the GF diet will be a cure for everyone in the cholesterol department. Mine is exactly the same post GF as it was pre GF. Even when I was starving to death, my cholesterol level was still borderline high. It is all heredity for me. _________________ -Colleen

Dr. Davis goes beyond just WF/GF. He suggests carbs (wheat, corn starch, surgars, Fructose, etc) in general are culprits.
For those with higher levels, please, spend some time looking thru his posts. Well worth the time!!
Check out this entry about a friend of mine. _________________ Al
