Hi Everyone...I'm new. I will try to keep this as short as possible. I have an 11 month old daughter that I brought to the Dr. because of persistent green runny stool. It was and is SOOO smelly and she was also having a lot of stomach pain at night. Her stomach makes these rumbling noises and gurgles. She wakes up several times a night crying out and putting herself in these awkward positions, I think to relieve the gas pains. (I have had her tested for allergies and they were all negative) So they did a CBC and stool check for parasites. The stool came back fine but she did have a high Platelet count and it says Microcytosis, which when I searched said it was an iron deficiency. I have another appointment tomorrow morning and I am wondering if maybe I should bring up the possibility of Celiacs. Do you think CD could be the cause of all her pain and green poop? I know my cousin's son has it but I dont know if that is close enough to consider "running in the family." I show some signs, like previous anemia(dont know if I still do) and stomach problems as well. Also I am very short and I have read that could be CD related as well. Anyways, I am just wondering if it sounds like CD could possibly be what is bothering my poor baby. TIA!!

Did the baby's problems start after being introduced to solid/finger foods? Have you recently changed formula or milk? You could try keeping a food journal of what the baby eats, to see if there are things that trigger symptoms? Cause and effect is not always easy to find with food, but it's worth a try. It's so hard when a precious little one is sick.

I would definitely bring the question up of CD with the pediatrician. And mention the family connection. FWIW, you should be able to ask a doctor any question, and be answered in a courteous, thoughtful manner. If your gut tells you that something is wrong then insist very firmly that you want answers. You are the best advocate your baby has. From what you wrote it sounds like the doc is trying to find out what's wrong, so should be receptive to suggestions/questions from you.

Hi, Babydi. Celiac has a list of symptoms that is about a mile long. Some of them definitely sound similar to what your daughter is experiencing. I think it would be reasonable to request the celiac panel as part of trying to get to the bottom of things. Make sure they run all the tests, not just a few.

Please let us know how things turn out.

I thought the Celiac panel wasn't really accurate for those under 2 years old?

False negatives are common. False positives are not. I would do it simply because it might show a positive result. A negative result would not be a clear no, however. Our pediatric GI told us he has seen positive results in kids as young as 9 months old.

And he said hes concerned because her Calcium level was also elevated. He referred us to the local Childrens Hospital. I did bring up CD to him and he was impressed that I even knew what that was. He said he def. thinks its a possibility but he doesn't feel comfortable diagnosing her because he doesn't usually work with infants and "rare childhood diseases" (he is a family dr.) So now I'm more worried then I was when I went in. I don't think the high calcium level would have anything to do with Celiec and Im just praying its nothing serious. I am waiting for an appointment at the hospital, hopefully it doesn't take long. Thanks for all of the quick responses!!

I hope you are on the road to getting some answers. Please remember not to remove gluten from her diet until the testing is complete. Removing gluten before then may cause healing and make it more difficult to get an accurate diagnosis.

My daughter was diagnosis at 18 months old after about 3 months of pooping at least 3 times a day and having the worst odor I can remember. It was also grey and somewhat oily. TTG came back elevated and we were sent to Childrens hospital for a endoscopy and the biopsy confirmed Celiac disease. She has been GF since November 2004. My other children have tested negative so far. I guess what I want to say is that early diagosis is possible and I think CD should be ruled out as a possiblity before other tests are performed. My husband and I were very greatful that her problem is completely controlled by a GF diet.

Hi, EMMESMOM! My son got his diagnosis at Children's as well. Glad to see another Washingtonian on the board. Hope to hear more from you soon.

Hi Emme's Mom,

Welcome to the board! WOW - we sure do have a lot of "westerners" here! Cool

Glad to hear Emme was able to get dx'ed NOW instead of years down the road. It's also good to hear that you've been testing the other kids. How often do you have them tested? Have you and hubby been tested?

I am thankful I have something that can be controlled "simply" by diet. There's a whole lot worse things out there!!
